Has anyone upgraded the stock back up camera?

I just bought a 2014 2LT/RS and I gotta say the backup camera on this is not the best by any means. The lack of lines is a disappointment, but to me it just seems a bit blurry and not accurate. Along the lines of objects may appear closer than they really are.

I was just wondering if anyone swapped out the stock camera with a better one using the current wires and stock head unit.

I know the 2012's have the lines in the backup camera because mine has it but I haven't seen anyone yet do a conversion or upgrade to something better. Maybe you could switch out the 2014 camera for a 2012 but it might not fit because the back bumper is different.

It's weird they would have had the lines before and now they don't.

I have a 2013 and the resolution seems pretty good to me. I've installed a few aftermarket cameras and they aren't as good. My 2¢.

I don't believe the camera produces the lines, it would be the software, that's probably why the 12's have the lines and the 13's and 14's do not.

It's in the camera. When I was putting one in my f150 I had the option of with lines or without.

So you put a GM rear camera system in a f150? Still how do you know it was the camera and not the software that runs the camera?

I heard a lawsuit made Chevy get rid of them. Idk if that's true or not though but it was said on here awhile ago.

What I was saying was I installed a backup camara in my truck and when I did I had the option of having lines or not having lines. They did not ask if I had an aftermarket head unit or a stock. So the radio had nothing to do whether the lines were there or not, it's all inside the camera.

Looks like it was a patent lawsuit.

I guess what I was saying was, you're assuming all cameras from all manufactures function the same way. It could still be in the driver software that runs the camera, still not necessarily related to your head unit

From the artical on the back up camera not having the lines it seems like its the head unit that determines if it has the lines.

Backup camera without helpful grid lines on the screen. Meyers says Malibu's screen comes from Panasonic, which got into a big fight with the patent holder, lost a lawsuit and now can't use the grid lines without paying "hostage fees."
"We'd rather have them, but it would be so costly it doesn't make any sense," he says.

The blurriness could be dirt on the lens itself. Make sure it's clean. Can't assume it's clean even if you've been through a carwash. Take a look at it, clean it up, and see if that improves the image.

If it was my car, I don't know that I'd go to the trouble of swapping out the camera or even the head unit because of a lack of "lines". I don't see backup cams as an essential piece of equipment (however, the NHTSA does...), let alone lines to guide you. Instead, I'd advise/encourage to improve your skill in maneuvering the vehicle in reverse and see if you can do it without the lines. Save money. Bolster skills.

This is my first car that has a back up camera. What are the "lines" you are referring to? What is its purpose?
