New torque converter install price

Weighing my options here. I am in need of a new TC and am tuned so I am out of warranty. I can either A- buy a circle D for ~1200 and pay a 3rd party to do the install. Or B- I can purchase a new OEM converter and pay a dealer to install ( not sure how much this will cost) or C- I can put the stock tune back in and try to get a converter under warranty. I would normally consider this unethical, but in this case, we all obviously know that my tune was not the cause of my converter woes. Not sure what I’m going to do yet but I need to do something soon, the car is shuddering worse than ever.

Any idea how much a converter would be installed at the dealer?

I don't know the exact cost but I can 100% guarantee that I know who would have the answer... They're just a phone call away.

Option C: it will die again
Option B: it will die again
Option A: it will not die and you get one change in stall speed for free

Hope that helps.

I wouldn't trust a dealer with an aftermarket torque converter insall.... find a reputable shop.... I would ball park labor would be in the 600 range

I think you know the answer. You don't want another OEM POS TC in there unless you don't plan on keeping the car more than a couple years.

You may not be able to do C, they can check for any 3rd party tunes and can detect even if the original tune is put back, it will be date/time stamped.

If your car looks stock with no mods they likely will not check, otherwise consider it a given.

If you can re-install the factory tune and are still under warrantee you should be fine. I just got a convertor under warrantee because of the shudder and my car is tuned. I re-flashed the factory tune on the ECM before bringing it in. My service rep said as long as the computer reads a GM tune it meets the requirements . they printed the "GM" software and sent it in as part of the warrantee paperwork and it went through ok. Now mind you, I'm not trying to warrantee the engine and that might be a different story. As soon as I got my car back from the dealer I pulled down the block and re-installed the tune. What a difference! Factory tune is so muted and sluggish. GM should sell tunes as part of a performance option, They would make a ton of cash.

If I were completely out of warrantee I would definitely go aftermarket! Either way good luck and god speed!

Option C is unethical. You’re rationalizing.

In theory yes it is unethical. In real life what is truly unethical is GM putting out a piece of crap torque converter that makes life miserable. Poor driving experience, multiple trips to the dealer to go through a series of steps that don't work long term. That is disruptive to everyone especially the car owner.

Great point. GM really has been kicking the can down the road, looking for warranties to run out... the shudder issues went on for the full 3 years of Camaro 8 speed production since even ‘18s have been experiencing the same problems. I find it hard to believe a company with GM’s size and engineering capacity could not fix this right away back in ‘16...

Corporations are not angels. Ethics aren't really their strong suit. I wouldn't worry about ethics.

OP, a lot of good information so far... I commend you on your concern regarding ethics but I would not worry about that. GM put me through the wringer on my 2016 TC (replaced) and it will undoubtedly rear it's ugly head again. At any rate, I would suggest you do whatever you decide soon as to limit any damage the junk TC can do to your transmission. Good luck!

What part of Florida are you? I had Brooksville Transmissions do the converter in my Gen5 ..was around $325 to RR.
