How to decode Stock #

Hi,
I am neck deep in researching a Gen-5 for myself and trying to absorb as much info as I can before making the jump. One line item I come across in listing is 'Stock #'.
Is this dealer specific, or another factory type code?
Bob

at most (chevy) dealers it's the last 8 digits of the vin. What's the stock number pal?

Stock # is only a number that dealer uses to identify the car. What you would need is the vin number if you are researching the history of that car.

Thanks for the reply guys, so this means it's based on the last digits of the vin and the order would need to be researched thru GM, or the 'options sticker' on the vehicle itself?

not always. Usually the bigger Chevy dealers use the last 8 digits of the vin. The stock number could really be anything the dealership wants it to be(their method of inventory). If you posted the "stock #" and it looks like the last 8 digits of the vin number I might could help you out a bit more.
