Catch Can Setup - Valve Covers

Hi all..I am setting up a new catch can, however I am running into an issue. Awhile back, a performance shop vented my valve covers. So now I have brass fittings on each valve cover with hoses to breathe.

The catch can I am setting up is from Motion Raceworks, and I'm setting it up from the valley to the nipple on the intake manifold as normal.

The issue is that I do not know what to do about these open valve covers. Should I plug them? I do not know why they are open or why they did that, so I can't answer why that is. I just need to fix or utilize it. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I don’t think vented valve covers is a good thing.

Here is what it is if you want to look at it. It’s just a catch can. Nothing overly different than others.

Just imagine the valve covers with brass fittings to allow air to escape. I can’t seem to get this to load photos but literally just fittings to allow air to escape and breathe. Not really much to see. But regardless I’m not sure why they are vented.

Why so? I’m just wondering should I cap them off or leave them alone.

On a true pcv setup on a non boosted application you need one of the valve covers connected to the air intake tube for a fresh metered air supply. The other can be capped.

You can then connect the can how you mentioned in the 1st post

I don't know how that can functions though so can't say for sure.

You usually connect the passenger side valve cover to the air inlet on the intake tube by the throttle body. And in your case I would vent the drivers side valve cover with a breather. On mine I have the drivers side hooked up to the intake manifold but I think you said on yours you have the port on the valley cover which means you the pcv system under the valley cover hence it goes from the valley port to the intake manifold correct?

Did you check the Motionworks web site? It says that can is for racing only and is not street legal.

In a race application, both valve covers are connected to the catch can. This sounds like the can you have. The idea is under boost there is blowby that causes pressure in the crankcase. This pushes oil vapor into the can and relieves the crankcase pressure through the filter on the catch can. I believe those systems also use a vacuum pump that's driven off a belt.

I would not plug your valve covers. Any crankcase pressure would have nowhere to go except out your seals. There's other reasons to have fresh air entering the crankcase that you can probably search for beyond the scope we're talking about here.

Other catch cans like the Mighty Mouse use the vacuum to help pull in crankcase vapors into their can, then if under boost, the crankcase pressure will exit the catch can through the vent filter on the catch can. The filter has a valve that prevents air getting pulled the wrong way through the filter.

Correct me if I have stuff wrong here guys.
