The good news on this is you can get a pretty good trade in on your DSS stuff from the DSS if you stick with their stuff... A guy at IPS just did that. I think he got around $800 for driveshaft and axles.

Also, DSS matched my driveshaft to my 4L80... that's why I did a new tranny now rather than waiting
hmm, 800 bucks... that does not seem like a lot... the halfshafts alone were 1300... maybe... i guess i will have to talk to them and see what they can do.

yea, they will have to do a special one for me too I suppose.

Also, because I want my vehicle for varying types of driving conditions street / drag / road course, i"m not going to convert it to a 9in., I think this was probably the only option so most folks went down this route.
are you referring to the to the difference between the 9in and the 12bolt?

the solid rear axel is out of the question now, Strange does not recommend using it.

you would not convert to the DSS 9in because it would not be good for all three types of driving?

My understanding of a Ford 9" (made for Camaro) is it's a stronger piece of hardware for high HP applications but it's a single axle setup, which basically means you just threw away part of the most important difference between the traction advantage between a Camaro vs a Mustang. The Camaro has Independant Rear Suspension (IRS) while the Mustang does not (for now).

Based, on that my interpretation of the meaning of this is one vehicle setup (9") is better in a straight line (drag racing) while the other is better on a road course with turns (IRS).

The best of both worlds is the new 12bolt IRS setup specifically designed for the Camaro. It's a super strong casing right up there with the 9" (or exceeds strength of 9"), and maintains your IRS system. Also, you have the option of various Eaton race gears to choose from, I asked about these gears and apparently these guys have been making gears for a very long time for racing so their product is very strong.

This makes the 12bolt system more superior in my mind because you have all driving styles nailed street / drag / road course without having to compromise performance for one or the other. Plus, you don't have to do any custom work to the rear end of the vehicle to make the 12bolt fit because it's specfically designed for the Camaro to be a bolt in piece of hardware. If you want to remove it and go back to stock you'll be all good. I don't think that's the case with teh 9", once you upgrade to a 9" you can't go back. That's just my interpretation based on questions I've asked, the experts can pipe in and correct me if I'm wrong.

some of that is incorrect calbert...

the 9in is IRS, it has two halfshafts just like our stock rear end. and it is a bolt in, no fab work needed.
Frank gave a decent write up today on this thread...

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196456

that helped clear it up for me, the hammerhead is a little pricey though.

what you are thinking of that was a single/solid axel rear end is the Strange S-9 that i was talking about earlier in the week. It is what is in the COPO Camaro, and yes, that is not as good on the curves, and it requires much fab work.
