Couple of quick questions.
I am well aware of the "ticking" noise the V6 seems to produce. Apparently it's most likely a result of the direct injection. However my engine ticks quite annoyingly, and while at school in our shop I pulled out a stethoscope and tried to pinpoint my ticking noise. I found it loudest when I had the scope on the engine head, and at first my instructor and I thought it might be a valve noise. However as we kept trying to pinpoint it we figured out that it doesn't happen on both sides, and that it was awfully near where the spark plug wire plugs in. (technical terms those :-) Anyways judging by the sound we heard my tick seems electrical, and it's only on the one cylinder. Driver's side closest to the cabin. And it gets faster with the revs obviously. I was just curious to see if anyone else had noticed this, or if I'm just paranoid (I know I am actually, but it does worry me).
Also, I just did an oil change at the same time I had it in the shop and I noticed that even though Classic Chevy, and the DIC told me I had life left in the oil after 5k, the stuff I took out was nearly black. It changed the color of my fingers... How long do I wait between the oil swaps? I mean I know the dealer will say to just follow the DIC, but I just can't do it, can't wait THAT long. My instructor said he didn't think the oil looked like it was synthetic either, which I thought you were supposed to use in these engines (the dealer did the oil change at 1k), so that's another question. Is synthetic required, or is the Castrol GTX I put in it going to be fine? |

Your a v6, u dont need Synthetic, but I use it anyways, because I want to treat my car super nice =)
Also, don't wait on the DIC, thats oil life... not when you should change your oil. different things. If you run your car hard all day long, ur oil life on ur DIC will show its super low. But you may have only ran 500Miles. Understand? So change your oil regularly. I changed mine at 750, and once again at 1500 miles, going to change it every 3000 miles from now on. It's not based on DIC, it's based on your miles =)

OP: Talk to your service manager and get his advice. FYI: I am also running synthetic in mine because it does make a difference and it has a longer lifespan than conventional.

O_o. Cuz for me, when I had to change my oil at 1500 miles, my oil life was at 90%. Based on the way I was driving, i could have gone till 5000 miles till i was at 50% but thats way past break in point. Blah, dont know what im saying now o_o

i always change my oil every 5000km regardless of what the computer says. as for synthetic its up to you. there are lots of pros and no major cons I can think of.

I am getting ready for my 3,000 mile oil change and was wondering if this was too soon or if anyone else had changed to synthetic this early...I know I want synthetic in as soon as possible, but didn't know how soon others had changed and if it made any significant changes. Lastly, which brand of oil is recommended. We usually use Valvoline for non-synthetic, but didn't know if there is a better option. Just looking for suggestions. Thanks all!
BTW - I usually change oil at 1,000, 3,000, and then every 3,000 faithfully! We always use the odometer. |
