tuning help
my car has been a nightmare since day one, bought it in aug 10, problems since. it was a demo with 2500 miles on it. After way to much money and dealing with shady "shops" i finally got the car back together to the point i can drive it.
The car is a 10 ls3 w/ fluid damper underdriven pulley, afe intake, vmax throttle body, American racing long tubes, 3" custom exhaust with an x pipe, trunion upgrade, ported and polished heads, a cam shaft (unsure of the specific specs) was told by the "performance shop" it was a secret and blah blah blah..all i know is 242/246 620/620 110lsa ( i listened to the advice of a professional...see how far that got me) and his super secret tune.. the car runs like a bag of shit. it loads up so much that i am back firing and farting all over the place. today was the first time i got to drive the car for any distance and my check engine, stabilitrac, traction lights would come on and then the car would back fire very loudly and they would go away. it did that 15 times over the course of 6 miles...had to take it back home. the car has been in pieces for years, has only 5400 miles on it (2900 miles in 4 years) it surges and bucks, feels like i have a miss at times and then itll be fine for a little and does it again. the exhaust smells like raw fuel. is this something that can be tuned remotely because i really dont want to pay to tow it somewhere, i dont know of any good tuners that can make this run correctly. im certainly not going back to westchester again. 3 years of phone calls and i havent even gotten a response... any help would be great. please...i would like to start using my car

so i hooked up my snap on scanner, and found a misfire code p0300 no surprise considering how it is running. i cleared it still running rough. I then had my dad jump in the pass seat and watch the scanner while i took a very short ride. under misfire cyl 1-5 and 7 & 8 show the numbers at 0,2 and 4 then they go back to zero and continue this cycle. Cyl 6 goes from 0 right to 140 (thats when the light show begins on the dash) check engine flashes, tc light, stabil light stay on after that the number drops back down lights go out except for check engine (which stores misfire code). now i have more questions than answers but my main one is this. is it the tune causing this problem or is it something mechanical (lifter, valve, spring etc.) and what do i do first. the car does have some valve train noise but its very minimal and these thing sound like sewing machines anyway. Its not anything that sounds abnormal all the cyl sound the same. i am planning on pulling the valve covers off tomorrow anyway just to be sure. also according to my snap on scanner im showing a spark advance at idle at -64. YES NEGATIVE 64???? is this normal to you because to me it doesn't sound right.

Yikes. Sounds like you got yourself a hot mess there. It can be tuned remotely.
I would be looking into a seat of HP Tuners if I were you. You're gonna need something to flash tunes and datalog with. Then you could contact someone to get you a decent base tune and you could drive your car to their shop to get the job finished. I don't know how far Slowhawk Performance is from you, but that's where I'd take mine in the NE. We have a similar problem here in Kansas. The nearest shop is about 3 hours away. For the last cam we did I did just enough tuning to get the guy to the shop in KC safely and they finished the job there.

I tried a CASE relearn, it didnt make a difference. Slowhawk is over 4 hours away from me as per google maps. Am i better off yanking the cam out and buying one from a shop that can tune the car with their own cam? I really dont know much about the cam that is in the car other than 242/246 620/620 110lsa I was given nothing more than that and it was after months of consistent phone calls when someone reached out to me on the sneak and gave me that info, same shop tuned the car and i hear nothing but nightmares now about blown engines. so now im getting nervous and i would like to get the car right.

That's a pretty big cam on a pretty tight LSA. I wouldn't put that cam in my LS3. I guess it all comes down to how much money are you wanting to spend?

Sorry to say that we have pulled that magic cam out of a few cars in the past few years. Most we put in our 228 cam and have gained power everywhere, nevermind it drives like stock after.
Sorry about your problems. It' can be tuned better probably but I know the Cam isn't the greatest. |
