Clint, are all these big-inch motors you're building emissions-legal? I was wondering about how a big motor with a big camshaft would do come emissions-time? The more I read about these builds, the more I wanna throw down and build a 454 for my car. I read with great interest a 454 build in Camaro Now magazine, that seemed very similar to some of the builds you've done. I'm a cubic inch believer...my Chevelle has a 592" BBC. No substitute...

Sam,

You just need a Pueblo address...no emissions tests here..

454 build would be sweet!

Supercharge it and call it a day ;-) Near stock driveability and amazing power on top end. With more cubes and more NA power streetability starts to become a factor.

No in all seriousness, totally up to you. Theres a pair of 434's in the shop right now, with the right cam, and setup absolutely they would pass the e-test.

All depends on how you set her up.

Ur car with the cam installed is putting out some serious power, 535 Engine Horse power with the traditional 15% Drivetrain loss. that much HP and pass emissions. Thats no slouch. You've only taken the 1st step, cam and bolt on's , here is where the fork in the road splits. Power adder of somekind, or go big cubes. I'll tell you FI at this altitude is hard to beat. were cursed with 20% loss in power being at 7000+ DA, make up for it by adding some FI pressure

RPS does have a double carbon clutch..... not exactly sure how it compares, but I've heard good things. Gotta wonder what flywheels it's compatible with. I'd prefer something that I didn't have to reinsert the tranny 3-4 times to get the spacing correct though.
Great idea Garth. I'll get one ordered!

Joe, good decision on the stroker. It will be interesting to see what really happens to the power. gain some with displacement lose some from less boost. But Torque will blow thru the roof and that is the fun part of driving anyway.

Garth....good suggestion about the tranny and rear end for sure.
It will be interesting to see how much the characteristics of the car will change given the extra cubes and less spin on the blower.

Garth (mostly)--RPM Tranny question

Garth,
What "level" RPM tranny did you buy for your car? 4, 5 or 6? I wanna step up and get one ordered so I have something to do when I return, since the tranny and hydraulics in my car have been my #1 complaint since the day I drove it off the dealer lot ..and hopefully Tick Performance or Keisler will have all their components R&D'd by April. I want to throw all that stock crap out!
I'm gonna have an "Office Space" bash fest with all those parts in the parking lot!!! Bringing my bat and some magnesium and burn it down...lol
Anyway, back to reality. I might have to step up to the 6, since I'll be running a big shot of nitrous, so I wanted to get some feedback. I don't think anyone else here has this tranny yet...if you do, please speak up.
thanks

Let me know.
Rob

Rob,

Garth is without a doubt your best source. I have talked to the folks at RPM however and they are pretty easy to talk to. According to them it depends upon your power and definitely the torq. The person I talked to said anything over 600 ft/lbs needs a level 6.

Is that RWTQ?? I'll be right at that level on the bottle, so I should probably do it. The rear shaft is probably the weakest link and if memory serves, the extra $1500 between the V and VI is the rear housing and 9310 shaft...and if i manage to get any traction at all, that will probably blow up and leave me stranded in Indy!

I'm gonna have to do some number crunching...spend more and more on this car now and depreciate it, or just save up and buy something I really want??...something that'll go faster right off the showroom floor.... sorry, it's Japanese, AWD and expensive. Not sure I can have both cars. (and keep the house and wife!! )

Tranny lasting depends a lot on how your drive it.

I've tuned a stock T56 Tranny to 1090 RWHP. Single Turbo Trans Am, Went 11.2 at 140mph at bandimere last year, granny shifting her. Will it last long, no.. But if you baby it, she could last a while.

Lucky for me, I have two bottles mounted in the trunk so I won't have any issues like that.

Yes, I have the RPM level 6. It's what Lingenfelter has been running in their 8 second car. Even with this, you have to keep a close eye on the hydraulic system health. Run a LPE clutch return spring, Tick Performance bleed line to keep things clean, Motul RBF 600 fluid, etc. I haven't heard of anyone making a good replacement for the master cylinder though. Too much or too little fluid flow can play havock on the slave. Too much will blow it apart. Kiesler was all hot about a new system... then it fell to the sidelines. I'm all for a better product, but not worth being the guinea pig at the cost of a Level 6 plus ZR1 Max CX setup. LPE has a setup for torque cut using a load cell shifter for their nitrous car. The literally can't shift the car without it because all the torque won't allow for it. The even went to straight cut gears and face plated gears. Clutch is only used for shifting into 1st gear!
