is my brake shop crazy? they told me they need a special tool to change rear pads.

went to my brake shop to get rear pads replaced,

dropped the car off and gave them a few hours and went back to pick it up.

they told me they couldnt change them,
because they need a special tool to change the rear pads,
and that they do not have it.

are they serious? or just mis-informed on this brake system?

any help is greatly appreciated

They need hands.
They need a punch/nail/screwdriver to knock the pins out.
Done.

They are morons.

I wouldn't let them do exhaust work if they couldn't figure out how to take out a couple simple pins on your brakes

Exactly. If they can't figure out brake pads, do you REALLY want to trust them with a welder under your car?

haven't done brakes on my ss,but some gm's do require a simple tool that pushes the piston back into the caliper, not sure on yours.. u can get em at autozone for free...still I would also avoid that shop like the plague, loi

I know plenty of mechanics that can't weld and plenty of welders that aren't mechanics. Doesn't mean they're bad at their day job.

There's many options that don't require anything or maybe a universal tool.
1) Most times they push right back in with finger pressure.
2) Possibly crack the bleeder and then push in if it's being annoying, since they should be bleeding them anyways...
3) I have a welders clamp that will fit in any caliper I've ever done brakes on, $8 at any home improvement place, and a piece of scrap metal or old brake pad backing plate to distribute pressure. I only use this on the old/crusty/rusty ones or if the new pad is massively thick and needs 100% clearance to get it back in.
4) Some people will use a crow bar for leverage but personally I think thats a bad idea unless the rotors are being replaced as well. Lateral loading something prone to warping that far out from its mounting point is never a good idea.
