Thanks, was starting to realize that as I typed the original post.

I remember the 71 VW - $1,995. Can still hear hear commercial - one penny a mile! I think your Camaro will always outclass any El Camino. IMHO

I do think I saw a Cobalt SS, is that possible, and if so, why?
Regarding the Cobalt SS, for its class that car really was a screamer. In fact at its performance level (about 11lbs/horsepower) it was one of the very best performance cars in its class. It performed at the top of its class in the Car and Driver Lightening Lap competition and is still among the top performing cars in that category even today.

Although many on this forum discount 4-cylinder performance, in the case of the Cobalt SS that designation was pretty solid.

Price looks to be pretty close (depending on options).
Remember, back then you way more control over what you wanted on a car.
A/C was an option, as was anything more than an AM radio.

I paid $2,000 for a brand new Ford Maverick in 1970.
A new Camaro was closer to $3k and a Corvette was close to the $6K range.

But also keep in mind, that the average wage was in the $3.00 $3.50 an hour range.
That is only $6,240 - $7,280 per year.

In the 30's and 40's SS stood for the bad guys. Schutz-Staffel or SS was the largest and most powerful organization in the Third Reich. When I saw VW mentioned above and recalled that the VW beetle was designated by AH as, "The People's Car" my history side popped up. Kinda glad this car isn't designed by Germans.

I worked for a shop back in the 90's where we did graphics, striping, tint, detailing, accessories, etc. The local Mazda dealer asked us to put stripes on three of their new mazda pickups and wanted "ss" in the stripe. Dumbest. ever.

Agreed, for a 4-banger that thing would fly. Sure beat out some V6's I've seen. Wouldn't of mind owning an SS Cobalt, only 4-banger I would have considered
