Fuel Pump...
Hello all,
I saw a thread a while back on what a hassle it is to change the fuel pumps on our Camaros. The one guy on this site was very industrious cutting an access hole but I probably will have it done by a mechanic when the day arrives. Having stated that, I have often heard that if you don't let your gas level get below half-way, (not sure if that is half-empty or half-full), but keeping gas levels up keeps the fuel pump from working so hard and can extend the life of it... Has anyone heard this or know differently? Lastly, where is the fuel filter on the V8 and what is recommended change? Thanks. |

Keeping gas lvls above 1/4 of a tank is helpful in making your fuel pump last longer. Your fuel pump uses the gasoline as a lubricant and to keep it cool.
According to the information system I have available to me the fuel filter is a part of the primary fuel pump module located inside of the right side of the fuel tank.

I believe the fuel filter is located inside the pump housing itself (can someone confirm). With that said, there is no recommended service to the fuel filter meaning you never have to worry about changing it.

Why would you need to change your fuel pump? Are you looking for serious horsepower? These pumps are made to run for hundreds of thousands of miles with no service needed. I have read DIY threads here where guys can drop the tank and change the pump in under 1 hour.

As long as you don't run the tank out of fuel completely, your pump will be fine.

I'll let you know about how long the fuel pump will last when regularly driving the car until the low fuel light comes on. I don't think I have ever filled up while still having over 1/4 tank. Almost always takes 15 gallons or more to fill.
Today low fuel light did not come on. Range showed 57 miles left when I got gas. Took 15.8 gallons with 380 miles on the trip meter. try to get 400 miles per tank. Work pays for one tank of gas per week, do you think I'm not going to wait as long as possible? |

Geez, it's not like your fuel pump will spontaneously implode if you drive with less then a 1/4 tank. As long as you're not running the tank dry on a regular basis, you'll be fine. People like to worry about silly things.

I run my tank with about a quarter tank everyday. I hate having a full or even half tank when I go to the dragstrip so my low fuel light is on constantly havent had a problem for my first 23,000 miles..lol
