Service Air Bag.. WITBB?!?!?

Yesterday, I had a passenger in the car, and some stuff (light blankets and pillows) filling the back seat. The back seat cargo was not heavy, nor was is stuffed tightly... it just sort of filled the back seat up.

The entire drive (20 miles), the "Service Airbags" message was displayed on the dash, going on and off. The "Airbag on/ off" indicator light kept randomly toggling back and forth the entire drive. Bells and warnings made the drive less than enjoyable.

After I had dropped my passenger off, I removed the stuff from the back seat. Then I had my wife go for a drive (she is the same size/ weight as my previous passenger was) with me. I could not get the "Service Airbag" warnings to activate at all... everything seems to work just fine now.

Are there sensors for the airbags in the rear seats or the seatbacks? Could something in the back seat have been pressing on a sensor? If so, why? Any other theories on why this happened?

hmmmmm.... who is this "passenger".... does your wife know about this "passenger".... hmmmmmm

no sensors in the back seat. there is a seat sensor in passenger seat to detect occupant size. if you under warranty I'd have it checked out... it may have tripped an airbag code

passenger seat occupancy sensor may be the problem. was the seat all the way forward or back? may have tugged on a wire. Mine went out 2 years ago.

If the passenger wasn't sitting normally in the seat, like if they sat off center or crossed their legs or something, the weight sensor can get inaccurate readings. Or if there was stuff on the floor behind the passenger seat putting pressure on the back of the seat, it could do the same thing.

No passenger air bag sensors in the back seats. Sounds like the problem is one of what was described above.

I had this happen coming back from OSW. There are a couple threads on it. I adjusted the drivers seat as I had readjusted it for racing and I removed the radar detector case I had stuffed under the passenger seat. Problem has not reoccurred.

If the sensor is bad, the sensor alone is about $300.
