Matte Black, Gloss Black or Polished

I'm looking into getting a set of zl1 replica rims, but i can't decide between finishes so I was hoping you guys could help me out. Here is a picture of my car, I can't decide between gloss black, matte black or polished. I'm leaning towards the matte black because they will match my hash marks but am really undecided. Let me know what you guys think !

Here is the wheels

Also if anyone has some experience with matte black rims I would appreciate it. Cleaning tips, wear... anything, never owned matte wheels before so I'm a little concerned, these will see lots of miles over the next couple of years.

Here is gloss black on a black (technically carbon flash) car. Personally I say go gloss with dark colored car and matte with bright colored car but that's just me. Why not just buy straight from factory reproductions they are a sponsored vendor here. I didn't run the numbers but I have to imagine phastek is more expensive because they need their cut too.

I decided on black and then struggled a bit on gloss or matte. I went with matte black and chrome lugs. I'm very happy with my choice.

Whatever you do, dont do polished. With all the small areas of this wheel, polishing them will be a nightmare. IMO, gloss and matte both look good. Personally, i think that a gunmetal color really looks sharp on a black car as well. Do they offer that color too?

Black wheels

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Not to upset the black rim folks, but black rims are the spinners of today. Just like the flash fad that the Lexus RX300 started years ago with the 'chrome bezel' clear tail light to the current LED craze, black rims will go out of style.

The car does not look racy, it looks like a stock car from the 70's with a steel rim wrapped in rubber. At least back then, the white letter tires stood out! Geez, out here in California, PRIUS drivers are removing the cheap plastic hubcaps from the rims and letting the even cheaper stamped steel rim show. Because its BLACK of course! Geez, I didn't even think they still made hubcaps!

Now I also know the other side. Polished rims are garish, old fashioned, not racy. I disagree. Our Camaro's are fashioned after the 67-69 models. Back then, SHINEY Cragars or Westerns were the rage. Take off the dog bowls or factory wheels and put a cool rim on.

So I'm not a black rim hater, well maybe I am, but I know everybody has different tastes. I just truly hope that the folks choosing black rims REALLY are choosing because they really like the look and it's not because it's the current look.

Always remember, certain things never go out of style, like solid colors on a car body, normal exhaust outlets, clear windows, chrome, and black interiors. Crazy metallic paint, crazy stripes, 6" exhaust tips, plaid interiors, all gone. Retro, but gone.

Tony's $.02 worth
