Titling Service

I'm hoping another dealer can explain this a little better. I live in NY, but will be buying the car in PA. Below is an email I received from my dealer:

"We will collect the tax and tag fees for NY when you pick up the car. We then send them to the titling service and they process the registration and get you plates for you. You will not have to go to the dvm at all. The service does charge us a fee for the service. I do not know all of the fees involved in NY for reg. But their fee is approx 150 plus the registrion fees. I would break it all out for you once the car is built."

Is the use of this service common for out-of-state purchases?

yes and no.

You do not have to use that service.

You can do it yourself when you register the car in NY...

I'd do it myself and save the $150.

I'll bite. How does he get the car back to NY without plates? Wouldn't he have to get the title from the dealer and take it to a NY DMV to get the plates?

Chance it. If a ticket is written it's bound to be around 150.00

I work at a dealership and it depends how things are set up between states. In Michigan we are set up to collect all or some taxes for other states and forward it along to them. There are some states that the customer will take care of the taxes when they go back to their own state if buying elsewhere than home. We can issue what they call intransit plates that are good for like 2 weeks. This should give customers long enough to get home and get a perm. plate on.

Wouldn't he just have paper temp plates?

I'm assuming you're referring to transporter plates? Does the dealer issue those?

The car can be purchased elsewhere and taxes paid for in the home states. Most states allow no plate on a car for upwards of 72 hours if you have a bill of sale.

As well, you can get a tempory plate from the originating dealer and go directly to Secretary of State and pay your taxes there and get your plate.

No. that's a different plate. What he is talking about is the 30 day paper plates that you get from the dealer when you buy the car. This one is from Ohio but they all say 30 Day Temporary Tag.

I am sure that Hilary Clinton would like that

However, I know you meant the state's Department of Revenue.

So from what I understand, the process would be like this. I would get temporary PA tags, and when I go to the DMV here in NY, hand over the temporary tags and title, pay the tax and title fee, and finally get my permanent plates. Does that sound correct?

Sounds about right except I don't think the NYS DMV really cares if you give them the "temps". Other than that, it should be like walking in and getting plates for any other car you've ever had.
