CEL cam position sensor

Had the car out for a couple of hours yesterday. Parked it and then started it about an hour later and it cranked over several times w/o starting and sounded like gun fire out the exhaust. I turned it off and re started it and it seemed fine. Went for a quick ride and no issues. I disconnected the battery to clear the code and put it away for the night. Just went to re start it and the CEL came on again, but the car is running just fine. I took it to auto zone and they checked the code and it came back as a cam position sensor. Any thoughts? Is the sensor just bad? Could there be internal damage? I have been running the after market cam for over 2 years now with no issues.
