Anything above the $44k in insurance money? If they cared enough about their customer, they would suck up a little loss. Again, I am not saying they should give him a new car, just exactly what he lost.

If the car they offered him had been 1 or 2 owner with 13,000 miles and no aftermarket rims or prior damage, I would say he should have taken it and moved on. 3,000 miles is not that big of a deal. I think that the dealer may have still been making some sort of profit on that deal though. Trade-in ZL1 with after market wheels and prior damage. I bet they raped the previous owner on that deal. When I traded my car, I know the dealer ran a car fax before they even made an offer. If mine had been previously damaged, I would have gotten a significantly lower offer.

In summation, I think both sides have agendas. I don't think that if I owned a business, I would handle it this way, but I don't own 1st State Chevy. Now, people upset over him having to buy a replacement and not just being given one, that's flat out stupid. OP should have to buy his replacement. Why would it be okay for him to walk away with $44k and a new car, just because the dealer had a bad employee.

Carry On.
Calling people stupid is a sign of someone with a weak mind. That said, Thank you for your service. Go Navy.

No one said he should get $44k and a new car free of charge. He has a loan to pay off on the wrecked car. He should be given a car such that he has the same equity amount in the car and still has a similar balance on a note (loan). Forum members don't think he should have to buy the car from this dealer = they don't want the dealer to earn a spread. The guy should get the car at dealer cost. Hopefully the note is with GMAC and that will make this a smoother transaction.

If it were my dealership, the OP would have had a rental vehicle while I found him a comparable replacement. I would also give him discounts on future parts and service. All I would be striving for is to turn a horrible situation into something positive...Basic Customer Service for Pete's Sake!

if you go on the dealership's website, they have a note from the boss there explaining what happened... i hope that anyone in their right mind would know NOT to buy their next car from there...

for my next camaro, i'm going to go there and ask them for the Eric Peterson special

Woah there kemosabe. I never once in that statement called anyone stupid. I said that the notion of getting a free car was stupid. That idea has been thrown out several times in this thread. I know this because I have read the thread in its entirety. How much could he possibly owe though? He traded an '11 2SS (around $25ish maybe?) and sold his prized 1st gen ( could be anywhere between $500-30k or more depending on condition) I would assume somewhere in the high teens or twenties.

I am still on OP's side either way. But there are plenty of folks in this thread saying that he should get a brand new ride, with some even suggesting that the car should be a C7.

The most interesting aspect to this situation is the OP is using social media to put pressure on a business owner to try and get what he wants. I feel bad for him and the loss of his ZL1 as this is always a real drain both emotionally, physically, and potentially monetarily. Lots of people get their cars damaged by the neglect of other drivers and you never see any thing more than "replacement" value. I was rear ended last year by a driver who was charged with negligence and I received a "replacement" value and was thankful of that. I did not start a smear campaign against the owner of the business who's son was driving the truck that hit me.

He doesn't seem to be, other outlets are picking it up due mainly to this thread.

I believe you assume too much.

Read thru this thread once again. Lots of opinions -- but few based on the reality of Federal and/or State Laws (which we are mandated to follow) -- nor do you have all of the facts.

The difference (in this instance) between you and me (and I perhaps am wrong in assuming that you are referring to me by your statement about crickets ) is that you are a bystander. You do not have to answer to others in the case of this incident.

I'm not an attorney - so in cases like this, I do not opine.

I DO happen to know Mr. and Mrs. Hooper -- I've talked to them a few times in the past two weeks and I know how much they loved their ZL1.

Do not assume that GM is not aware of this issue.

Do not assume that GM is sitting back and doing nothing.

Thank you, maybe now some of the bickering and finger pointing will ease up and sound and thoughtful thinking will prevail.

I see 1.4, and rightly so if the dealership will not make it right. Good luck to OP.

Man bought a new car for 60k or so.. drives it 10k and wants them to buy him a new one. Horse manure. Just because he THINKS he has the dealership for some kind of a mistake they made. What if the place caught fire, tornado ripped it to Kansas. The same result.. simply an insurance claim. Who gives a rip what kind of car it was? I support the dealership in their decision how to handle it and frankly it is out of their hands. That is exactly what Insurance is for. Let him sue the Geico Lizard. This whole fiasco has went clear out of control and the owner thinks all the hoopla on the web will get him more. It won't and shouldn't , and IF it does it only shows how ignorant society has become.
While I do agree that our society has an entitlement problem......I completely disagree with you in this situation. The OP is damn well entitled to get an equivalent replacement. I bet if this happened to you, you wouldn't be so supportive of the dealer....and probably wouldn't think this 'has went clear out of control'
