What's that burning smell?

Today I traded in my 2011 2ss A6 vert for a 2012 2ss M6 vert. The new car has the Hurst short shift option and less than 200 miles on it. On the way home from the dealer I noticed what would be described as a burning rubber smell. The smell seems stronger after doing a lot of shifting like in stop 'n go traffic. Don't remember a smiliar smell when I first got the A6. Is this normal for the mamual transmission during the break-in or should I have the dealer check it out?

Sounds like it could be the clutch.

My 2012 SS M6 had a strong smell when I first drove it. Some say its oils etc burning off the new engine and transmission. I put a RX catch can on at 400 miles and never had the smell again.

how much manual experience do you have, might be riding the clutch

Its probably the clutch breaking in (slipping) to your driving style.....

It's been 10 yrs since I regularly drove a manual. I'm pretty sure I'm letting the clutch peddle out all the way out between shifts.

Kim,

Congrats on the new wheels, I have a 2011 2SS/M6 (Synergy). The smell you are experiencing may be from the initial break-in of the rubber seals or clutch in the car. I would recommend you keep your eyes open for possible leaks. I have experienced an unusual smell from the clutch while backing, it was because I was not letting the clutch completely out. This was causing the clutch to burn. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially with the new wheels. If the smell continues, I would definitely take the car back to the dealership to ensure there was nothing wrong.

Clutch I bet. Make sure you arent riding it as well in traffic. But it could for sure just be break in.

Yeah everything has a certain break-in period. Tires, brakes, clutch disc, etc. Just keep an eye (or nose) on it.

I had the same smell on my M6 when it was new. It went away after 500 miles or so. Just a normal break in smell.

It's the clutch. Mine still smells sometimes when I'm riding up into the garage because I live on a hilly driveway. Car only has 500miles on it so its probably just breaking in.

Most new cars have fluids on the engine and exhaust components so they don't rust while they are waiting to be assembled into the new cars. All new cars have this smell for the first few hundred miles while it is burning off. If it doesnt go away.after 500 miles then take it back in but I would not worry.
I work for a dealer and get a new demo every 5000 miles and they all have that smell at firsf

The day I bought my car, I noticed the same smell, there was a lady there that also bought one hers also smelled like that. I noticed the salesman did not think much of it. The Smell went away by the time I got it home like 20 minutes later.
