When the new cam went in were the bearings replaced?

Doubt it. Vengeance did the install.

Disclaimer: I am not an engine expert.
My best guess is you're losing pressure at the cam bearings. Maybe we can get an engine expert to weigh in. |

Just my opinion here but with that many miles I would think the engine could use a rebuild anyway! Especially with the Maggy on it and the way you downshift it has had a hard life! If you decide to pull the engine I would stroke it and use some forged internals, or replace the whole engine with an LSA crate or LS7 crate engine. Then sell the LS3 for the block and sell the Maggy to recoupe some cost!
Edit: sell the L99 not LS3. Forgot you have an auto |

Another option is pull the engine to replace the cam and bearings. While it is open replace the main and connecting rod bearings. Install a new oil pump and you should be reliable for a fair number of miles. Can you do a compression test as she sits? Cylinder leak down? Again, I am guessing, but I think the debris will be from the cam and cam bearings. I think you can check them with the engine still in the car and a scope. A close inspection of the cam will probably tell the story. |

Compression and leak down check are not related to the low oil pressure. If you find a low cylinder relative to the others it raises the possibility the debris in the oil pump or pan may have traveled and done other damage.
Again, I am not an engine expert, but the minimal cranking required to do a compression test without any plugs in the car shouldn't do any damage. |

I always hated those tests because if you found what you were looking for it meant bad news. |

I'm thinking the pump just chewed it's self up. Started to wear and then wore to a bad level and just started to do that. I'd bet money I take it apart and find nothing. That metal in the filter definitely came from the pump because I bought a new pump and the gears mesh perfectly. So there was a lot of metal missing from the pump gear lobes. Spent Monday looking for a reason not to pull the cam and put the engine back together. Had to bowl yesterday evening. Team is in first place so they want me there. (though I'm not sure why, my lower ab/groin pull is not healing) Anyway. I have a busy week at work and a tournament to bowl this weekend. UGH................ |
