mgw shifter creaking
i bought and installed an mgw shifter a few months ago and have noticed a kind of creaking noise coming from the shifter while going over bumps and braking...at first when i installed it and took it for a test drive, noticed the noise. i brought it back in and went over everything i did with a fine tooth comb and triple checked every nut and bolt i touched to make sure they weren't loose. i figured the shifter just needed to break in and the noise would go away after a month or so...hasn't been the case. i was just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if so, what, they did to fix it.

I never heard of this, I suspect due tho the MGW design you could install the shifter body to high or too low and it could potentially rub. When I first installed mine I had it too high and it did not shift smoothly into 2nd. I talked to George and re-adjusted the position and now works great... Why don't you give George a call, he is always very helpful.

I am having the same issue with my MGM shifter, creaking is a good work for it, it happens whenever I stop hard or pull out. Mine is really loud. We looked at it and can't see anything odd. It works fine, but the noise is annoying for sure. hopefully someone with mgw can help!

i guess i forgot to mention that it is the newer version of the shifter that doesn't need to be adjusted when it is installed. Just like Madmax, it works fine, just an anoying sound. Almost embarising when ever someone else is in the car. I'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem though.

I tried to look at MGWs site for a few days now and it has been down. I also tried looking for posts from George and it looks like all the ads have been removed from Camaro 5. This does not look good. Does anyone have any information on getting in touch with them?

I think I had the same problem you guys are talking about. Give George a call, he will probably send you guys the new bushing. Solves the problem, and the shifter works great. See this thread.

hey guys,
sorry i have not gotten in here before now.... here is the deal... about 3 months ago, i changed the small bushings in the back of the shifter where it supports the 2 pins. my desire was to improve the product by allowing the shifter to move more freely with the g forces of braking and accelerating . everything worked except for one samll VERY important detail that GE polymers neglected to tell me... this bearing thermal plastic has a moisture absorbtion factor off the charts so if you want to make VERY precise fit parts like we do here then you must either soak the material in water or oil prior to machining or open up the tolerances a bit. Well without knowing this i machined them to within .0015" tolerance. which for a few weeks worked great but when the humisidty and heat from the exhaust caused moisture buildup the bushings swelled and basically clamp the pins so the creaking comes out!! its an easy fix just call julie or peggy at 706-793-1770 and they can mail you out the new bushings and it will solve the issue. and as far as the ads disapearing i was out of the office when our renewal came up . i really wish the admin would give a grace period or at least do automatic rebill. oh well.... regards george |

I also recently purchased an MGW shifter, about two months ago. Mine does the Exact same thing. Very loud and at first I thought something would break if I ever had to Slam on the brakes. I called George at MGW and he's sending me new bushings. Something to do with the new bushings on the rear brace absorbing moisture causing the sound. Give MGW a call and they will help you out. p.s. I'm still waiting for my new rear brace with the different bushings to come in. I'll see if that was the issue. From what George was explaining to me.. The current bushings absorb moisture and grip too tightly on the two silver bars on the back of the shifter, which is what is producing the noise.. It is supposed to moved freely back and forth. EDIT: I did not notice George already answered your question. lol.. I'll report back after I install the bushings. |

Installed the new bushings. Works Perfectly. A little surprised how smooth it is. Very nice shifter.
