retail on the OEM brake pads is $246.40(that is the retail price for the new updated pads per the bulletin).we(a chevy dealership) had a customer come in and decided to go with the cheaper Durastop (ceramic) pads and they didn't make it down the road before they started to squeal like a pig.the customer came back and we installed the OEM pads and the problem went away.
i agree with Spektrum,it is both the dealerships fault for not providing an estimate, but also the customers for not asking for one. we have sportscars, not everything is cheap on them.for 2013 the camaro has a heavy duty set of frt pads for $450.00.i would presume they are for the ZL1,but my parts catalog is not specific on that. |

I only go to the dealer for parts when I cannot get them elsewhere. The parts store by me has a lifetime guarantee on most parts. And front pads are perhaps "auto repair 101". But I can still understand why not everyone will attempt the DIY.
Camaro5 is a great resource if anyone wants to give it a shot though. I already bought a new 150 ft-lbs torque wrench for the lug nuts. At 26K my DIY has been limited to oil changes. |

What was the complete parts list? They should have also replaced the rotors, or at least turned them.
And it doesn't take long to rack up a large bill with the hourly shop rate at $100 hr. |

If they took the rotors off, they should have replaced the caliper bolts as well. Those are one time use bolts if they followed the specs. Those are at least $20 discounted for a set of four.

Look at it this way,Take a 2012 Corvette. If the fuel pump dies and you can get a GM one for $600 or an aftermarket for $200.00.The dealership wants 4 hours of labor @ $100.00 per hour. That's a $1000.00 for the repair at the dealer.Or $200.00 for you on your garage floor.Sounds like a no-brainer to me.Both fuel pumps come with a lifetime warranty. Now your aftermarket pump dies in 8 months,no problem..you have a warranty. Now the problem becomes, the Pep Boys pump doesn't cover labor. So you spend another weekend taking out the rear end, transmission, exhaust and torque tube of the vette...on your garage floor to get even close to the tank with the primary pump in it,so it takes you 8 hours each day on your garage floor to replace it. Let's do the math.... Dealer- pump $600.00 labor $400.00 total $1000.00 with a lifetime warranty on the parts AND labor. So,if the GM pump fails, just drop off your car and we'll take care of it for you. Aftermarket- pump $200.00 labor $your time(@$100.00 per hour) x 16 hours $1600.00 (8 hours a day x2 days on your garage floor without a lift) total $1800.00 now if it fails ever again(and it will...) you have all that labor to do all over again...so $1800.00 plus another $1600.00( for another lost weekend).... not all aftermarket parts are a deal...... |

Your math is correct...your assumption that non-OEM parts are somehow lacking when compared to OEM parts is flawed.
