How to clean this... ?

Hey guys,

So I was wondering if any of you guys have had this problem before and how I would go about cleaning it. I know my rims are dirty because I have not cleaned the car in a while, but before I clean it, I want to know how to get this done.

I am going to be taking the rims off so it will be a lot easier to access. But how do I clean up that rust ?

Since you are taking the wheel off, use a wire brush and some brake cleaner. I would also paint it with some cailper paint when I was done.

Agreed, wire brush to remove the rust... once its clean wipe down with alcohol or a surface prep for paint. Mask off the surrounding area and spray with high temp paint. All GM cars and trucks have that issue... best solution is to paint it, they become much easier to keep clean with a coating on them.

Agreed with everyone, clean them and paint them, if you can get some clear coat them also.

How much of it should be painted? Bought some paint to do this and have been wondering how much I should actually paint behind there

You should paint the whole gray area (the rotor hat). Once you take the wheel off you will see what I'm talking about. Just be carefull not to get any on the rotor itself. Where the pad makes contact.

Honestly in my experience it really doesn't matter if you get it on the rotor, the paint is gone within a minute of braking, and I haven't noticed any negative effects. It actually gives you a nice clean line from the pad wearing off the paint.
