Using the term "forged" in the aftermarket means the wheel was CNC machined out of a solid chunk of forged billet aluminum. There is a big difference in quality and price between rotary forged and CNC forged. Here is a post I made to help define the differences:

Interesting, thanks for the informative link Tony.

I was under the impression that the ZL1 wheels were forged monoblock. GM's statement that the ZL1 wheel and tire set up is lighter than the factory SS setup, even with the wider wheel and tire, led me to believe this.

Now I wonder if they are "flow formed". Anybody know?

Flow formed wheels are lighter than the OEM wheels too, even when wider. The popular Forgestar wheels I sell are flow-formed and lighter than OEM. Forged monoblock wheels would never show up on a production vehicle, they are too costly to build ($3500-5000) and take too long to build. I can't think of any mass produced vehicle that has actual forged wheels on it. Not even the exotics.

So how much extra for the wheels that were on the car shown in February? This is a big setback for me.

The SSX-style wheel is definitely lighter than the polished/machined ones. By how much...I dunno. But if I had to guess, I'd say ~5 lbs a wheel...1lb estimate for each "bar" of metal removed from the center each spoke on the silver wheel.

Both look to be very expensive wheels (factory-speaking)...since they're both constructed relatively the same, it would seem with this news that the finish process on the SSX wheel is less expensive than that for on the polished one.

I know I'm happy about this!

I am glad you said that, I was starting to feel like I was the only guy around that doesnt care for black wheels.

Sweet, better chance of picking up a used set. But used or purchased directly from GM, don't matter to me. I will have these wheels on my SS.

ditto, ditto, and ditto.
I'd like to find a set that are black with polished face for my black SS, or possibly all polished. All black is too much for my black car, IMO.

As soon as I sw the SSX concept I stopped looking for wheels and started waiting for GM to put them into production. The wait is almost over, now they need to hit the streets!

This just doesn't make sense. Take the lighter-than-stock SSX wheels and make them standard, so that people pay more to get heavier wheels and slow down the zl1? Yeah. I'm preeeety sure these are gonna be on the zl1... with a price.

Umm I will most likely get flamed for these opinions so here
goes my thoughts.

1) No official statement has been made as to a weight
difference between the two rims. I believe Scott informed
me at the Frederick National Camaro event that they
weighed the same. If I mis heard him then I would
be first to apologize to everyone here, that I gave misinformation.

2) If indeed the SSX rims do in fact wiegh less then the polish
ones, then this would help to reduce the stock ZL1's
weight. I would imagine that they have a target weight
for the finished product, which could also help to avoid the
GGT.

3) Perhaps the mostly is that the SSX rims costs less to
produce then the polish rims. Thus helping to lower
MSRP on the stock version of the Zl1. I'm sure that GM
is hoping to keep this car as affordable as possible

4). Lastly GM does read these threads concerning the ZL1, and
perhaps they felt from the feedback here that the SSX rims would be the most popular of the two.

I imagine in the coming months we maybe given some
additional insight from GM concerning the rims and thier
choice for using the SSX rims for stock.
