Defiantly not the case using a spreader on the aluminum housing.

I was there with stikSS during the gear install, what he says is correct.
The Old timer showed us how to do it and what to look for.

He also told us when the units are assembled at the factory the housings are heated during assembly to ease spacer installation.

As said, these are not Old School assemblies, the tolerances are spot on.

I don't see this as beyond the realm of a DIY kinda guy who knows his way around cars.Either the gear pattern is correct or it's not and I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night

So for those who have done the gear swap, how does it feel? Does the car feel stronger?

Willhe64 is 100% correct. The pattern is critical and tells all. And if it howls, odds are redoing it correctly may no cure it once it has messed incorrectly.

Wanted to report back since I had my 3.91 gears put in yesterday.

I must say it went in just Like StikSS gears did

No install kit,No shims needed...perfect contact patch on drive and coast side.

GM gears rock!

About to order my 1le gears. I got really lucky being a tech at a gm dealer and getting them 10% above cost!

In my experience with doing countless gear swaps both under warranty and on other vehicles at my own shop, if you buy aftermarket gears, go ahead and get the shim kit. You will need it. If you buy oem gears, the tolerances are so close that really the only variance is in the housing. 99 percent of the time you can use the original shims and be spot on. Out of all of the oem gears I have installed only a few have required tweaking.

If this tells you anything, the gm kent Moore pinion depth tool they supplied us doesn't even use the pinion gear to measure pinion depth. If I think of it tomorrow I will post a picture of our pinion depth tool.

So the main thing is to check your pattern once you get it installed. Worst case scenario you may be the one unlucky guy that has to take it back apart to put a different pinion shim in. With me being flat rate I would rather take the chance and install with the original shims. Then check the pattern and go from there. If it is spot on I just made money. If I have to re shim it I may have wasted a little time but oh well, it doesn't happen that way often haha.

Same here!

I read on another forum that bearing preload should be 18 -25 inch lbs

Ring bolt torque specs?

backlash threshold?

Pinion depth I plan on taking a measurement from the old gear before it's removed.

Diff cover torque specs?

Any help would be appreciated!

Its been a while since I've been on here.... but for all who are wondering or were waiting for me to say my install has failed because it wasn't put in with microscopic tecniques....

Its perfect.... close to 5k on em this far and no leaks, no whinning, no unusual noises, just rocket quick.

67motorcat and I had ours done at the same shop and another 2 more of our members had theirs done with the same mechanic and shop.... same installs, same result.... perfect
