Trouble with the gills?

I guess they're call gills. Those 3 strips just front of the rear wheels. Mine started turning whitish looking. No matter what I cleaned them with, after 2-3 days, they turned whitish again. A friend showed me that it was very easy to simply pull them off. I think it looks ok with nothing there, but was wondering if anyone else has done anything in this area. I've seen so that were chromed, but didn't really care for that. If anyone has a black Camaro with the gills painted some other color, I'd love to see it.

I had mine painted when I had my stripes painted. I think they look good.
