V8 Tranmission Upgrades

Well, I don't need this just yet, but I've seen (as I'm sure we all have) a lot of HP upgrades. At what point in HP or torque would I need to look at upgrading the stock tranmission. I have a huge list of upgrades I would like to do as time and $ allow. I've seen a lot of other drivetrain upgrades (clutch, flywheel, rearend, axels, driveshafts, ect) and I think I have an idea of what I would like to do, but I can't say I've seen or even heard a lot of people talk about their transmission upgrades. I can't recall exactly where, but I thought that I heard that the stock transmission on the SS/LS3 (6L80?) cars was only good to about the point of 600 HP. If any one can point me towards a tranmission that can handle more HP than stock I would appreciate it.

This a great question!

I am sure someone will figure it out soon enough, dimensions and all. I am not sure anyone listed what the current one will take?

Are you going to do the Silver State Classic, or do they still run it? Most these folks have no idea of a real Banzai Run I am sure! We expect pictures and video if you do!

Here's a listing of all the gm spec sheets. Click on the ss and it will download a spread sheet with the specs for you.

"SS" Does not say maximum capabilities of the tranny, nor the dimensions of the transmission... hmm have to dig a little deeper. Thank you, this is still a good resource!

2010 Tremec TR6060 (M10) 6/5/2009

Fluid capacity (approx): with cooler line Dry: 3.94L +/- 0.06L, ( 133 oz +/- 2 oz. ) with cooler line fill
Power take off: No
Applications: Chevrolet Camaro SS

If you click on the Story, this is there:

Overview
Both the standard Corvette and the high-performance Z06 use the TR6060 designated as MM6, which is validated to 500 lb-ft of torque, while the TR6060 with the Z51 option features higher ratios and is designated as MZ6. It is validated to 430 lb-ft of torque. The ultra high performance ZR1 uses the TR6060 designated as the MH3, which is validated to 650 lb-ft of torque. The CTSv uses the MG9 version of the TR6060 validated to 560 lb-ft of torque. The Camaro uses the M10 gear set validated to 430 lb-ft of torque.

So, sounds like technically, a trans upgrade is in order based on the gears used... for the M10.. need to get the MH3 version, or see what else is out there.. :(

I am only asking because I have a giant list of power adding mods I would love to do. I've found a few options for the rest of the drive train, but I haven't heard the full capabilities of the transmission. So, I guess, I'm thinking at a certain point I will have to swap out the trannny, shroomjon

Hamidar05, I won't be able to make it to the Silver State Classic Challenge this year (looks like it's September 16-19). I will be out of the state. :(

v6sonoma, thanks for the link.

Thanks

That's what it's VALIDATED at, not what the maximum capability is. There are people running well over 700 RWHP one the full stock drive train. The real limit has not been found yet for the SS parts, except maybe for the axles.

Anyone from Nevada probably knows about gambling.. and I wouldn't want to gamble on being stranded on one of their lonely highways if the transmission broke...

rockland standard gear you need a stronger output shaft and a support bearing in the tail housing at least
