My Z06 was tempermental like that occasionally. I forget what the cause was, but I was told to keep the clutch in and move the shifter to "1st" and then back to reverse. I'd do this whenever I felt any resistance when initally going to reverse and it would go in like butter.

The clutch is aparently dragging slightly (not fully released) with your foot on the pedal all the way to the floor and the transmission input shaft is still turning with the rest of the gears in the box. That makes it hard to get into reverse with everything still spinning around at different rates. The forward gears have a synchronizer assembly which will cause a little bit of friction as you put the lever into a forward gear. The forward gear synchro will tend to stop the input shaft from turning as it engages and that stops all the gears in the tranny from rotating (breaks free fully at the clutch). Once the gears stop rotating, the reverse gear will be easier to engage. Reverse does not have a synchronizer to slow the gears down before they engage so that is why putting it in a forward gear first helps. The clutch can drag from poor adjustment (on some cars) or from overheating the clutch (abuse/slip) causing heat warpage of the pressure plate. -Mark. |
