Tune "only" HP increase?

Having spend dozens of hours reading threads, doing searches on various potential mods for my Camaro it seems most (if not all) comparisons of performance mods come down to HP gains without or with a tune. For example - CAI's results are posted with/without tune, posts about long tube headers quote HP gains with or without tunes - etc.

I can not find an answer to one of the questions rattling around in my brain - How much HP can be gained on a stock LS3 with a tune only. From my days owning an SSR with a LS2 getting a tune only sure helped with driveability, elminating the 1st to 4th shift, throttle response and picked up over 20 HP with no other changes. The reason it may matter to me is it changes the "bang for the bucks" comparison on mods.

Thanks

i think its like 5- 10 rwhp, basically the toruge management removed that helps alot, the 1-4th deal is gone.

This guy got 7hp/4tq to the wheels with a stock LS3.

I think it depends on the tuner tho. But a dyno tune on an otherwise stock car is probably the worst bang for the buck mod. Dyno tunes can cost over $600 depending on where you go. And if you got a dyno tune for stock car, then you would have to get it re-tuned for future mods. You'd be better off doing your mods first and then getting a dyno (or even a custom) tune.

I depends if you have a l99 or ls3, for the ls3 ya about 5-10 hp, however for the l99 its more like 10-15 hp, and on top of that the amazingly better shift points. stock l99 tune is crap.its a whole new type of car then.

What he said but even then its best to group it together with a cai and or LT headers for best results.

I couldn't freakin agree any more.....the shift points on my custom tune is crazy. Even my tuner can make the shift points more or less aggressive....which results in a better E.T. time....as I am told
After the tune, it felt like I was driving a tuned manual but better. Power was on tap fast...

I disagree that a tune on a stock vehicle is worthless, GM leaves a lot to be desired with these cars right off the lot. We can usually pick up 10-15hp on a totally stock one, if not more, but the driveability is what really makes it worth it. Better throttle response, off the line performance, no skip shift, if it's an auto we spend a lot of time tweaking the shift points for a huge difference.

Plus, if your dyno tuner is like us, you won't pay for a full tune again when you return with more mods, ours are usually half price. I recommend a tune every step of the way - stock, after first round of mods, second round of mods, etc...there's always more HP and driveability to be found whether it's totally stock, modified to the moon and back or anywhere in between.

Yeah, my L99 (early model - preordered car) picked up around 25 - 30 ft lbs of torque right in the mid range where you need it.
I believe it picked up around 12 - 13 rwhp (peak).
My bone stock L99 couldn't/wouldn't spin the rear tires no matter how hard I tried. After the tune, it was easy to spin the rear tires.

I've heard the 2013 L99s have a much better stock tune. Don't know that for a fact though.
