Bush Timing -- Information and Nothing but Information
Bush Timing
Step 1. Lift the car on a two post lift and raise it. Step 2. Loosen the following bolts/nuts: Front: ---Inner Control Arm Bushing ---Inner Radius Rod Rear: ---Trailing Arm Bushings (both ends) ---Toe Rod Bushings (both ends) ---Lower Control Arm Bushings (Inner) ---Upper Control Arm Bushings (Rearward) ---Lower Strut Bushings Step 3. Lower the car and drive it around the parking lot SLOWLY and on to the alignment lift. Step 4. With the weight of the car on the wheels tighten all of the nuts/bolts to spec. Step 5. Align the car at the new ride height. Alignment Front and Rear Bolt Torque Values NOTE: Torque specifications that read XX torque value and XX degrees are usually TTY and require replacement of the bolt, nut or both. If replacement parts are not available from GM the minimum acceptable torque will be those values stated along with a liberal application of a thread locker i.e. LocTite. Any chance that you can post up something similar on the GTO forum?
Bushing timing is only relevant with rubber bushings since the poly bushings are "floating" on the metal ferrule and not bonded, correct? About about caster - do you recommend maxing it out in all applications (ie: 10-11* on a GTO)? THanks. |

As for GTO caster, my answer would be a qualified yes. The wheels can be pulled so far forward on some GTOs that the tire will rub he driver's side inner fender liner or plastic tank on the passenger side. This is especially true with a larger than OE wheel and tire setup. As long as there is no interference, max the caster on your GTO. |

The GTO sheets are in the works, but it's going to be 2-3 weeks most likely.
Contact Rob over on ls1gto.com, he can help you out. |

I asked my GM dealer mech yesterday about installing some lowering springs for me and also about timing the bushings, and he looked at me and said, what do you mean by ,,timing the bushings ?? and I explained it to him and he looked at me like I was nuts.. Should I not take the car to them?? Thanks..

Do you have to bother loosening if it’s a poly bushing?

FYI, the nuts for the control arms are TTY. That is most always the case when you see XX torque and XX degrees. TTY is also code for single use. The GM process is to replace the nuts with new nuts. You should always follow the manufacturers shop manual.
The bolts and nuts are all hardened. They bolt through a steel ferule. They are next to impossible to over tighten. Since many of our customers run their vehicles well beyond anything the factory considers reasonable we follow the German spec of Gudentight with LocTite. Make sure all the suspension bolts are to this spec spec and LocTite them all. Well almost all. LocTitie on the wheel lungs can be an issue |

I just clarified the Bush Timing process in response to a C5 user question.
Bush Timing Step 1. |
