This thread seems to be going slow. let me see if I can wake it up some. Anyone know why Chevy put an Auto in the COPO drag car? Watch the first video from this.

Because almost all serious drag racers drive autos.

Taken from the linked article: For certain applications, the slippage inherent in automatic transmissions can be advantageous; for instance, in drag racing, the automatic transmission allows the car to be stopped with the engine at a high rpm (the "stall speed") to allow for a very quick launch when the brakes are released; in fact, a common modification is to increase the stall speed of the transmission. This is even more advantageous for turbocharged engines, where the turbocharger needs to be kept spinning at high rpm by a large flow of exhaust in order to keep the boost pressure up and eliminate the turbo lag that occurs when the engine is idling and the throttle is suddenly opened. http://www.dragtimes.com/drag-racing-transmissions.php

Im not arguing that automatics are better and faster for drag racing, I'm just saying its a lazy choice. Why bother throwing javelins at the Olympics when we can shoot a rocket around the world and beat that distance easily? Out of curiosity, is there brackets that restrict the use of automatic trans and require a manual? |

I'm not saying one is better then the other, I owned my share of Muncie 4 speeds in my days. I just don't see why some people build high HP cars with sticks for drag racing. I know I'm getting old and times are changing. But I like stick cars, I've won a lot of money off misses shifts. And yes the track I race at has Stick shift only races. |
