I'm about to order some and try this mod myself. The following is what I found:
25 SMD LED bulbs 42 SMD LED bulbs I'm going to try the 42 SMD bulbs first, since they're brighter. If they fit, then great. If they don't, then I'll try the 25 SMD bulbs. |

You may also want to try 'side emitting' led's. It's an LED flexible light strip, but the LED's show out of the side rather than the top. I put mine under the lip of my bumper. Just had to drill a small hole in the diffuser to run the wires through. I tapped in to the wires for back up lights. Can't even see the light strip when looking at the car. You have to lean over and look under the lip to even notice that there is a strip there. But when the back up lights are on.....

I've seen you guys using the 5 and 25 SMD LED bulbs, but I'm going to try something a little different. It's just a little more pricey than the SMD bulbs, but if my R&D works, this will really balloon this mod up.
For anyone using the SMD style LEDs, I'm sure it's an improvement over the stock set up, but look at the bulb on the left when compared to a 5 LED SMD bulb on the right: I can get a pair of these 194 based bulbs, for $16.45. I've already got my stock reverse lights out since I found a set of AAC ones on Ebay for $100 so I'm going to begin this project and test them out.

So I got the lights done in the housings. I have not yet attempt to put these on the car yet but here are some pictures.
First, changed the stock bulb for the LEDs: Mounted the bulbs into the stock connector base: 9V battery test: Here is a little video of one of my lights being tested in a dark storage hallway. I used my cell phone for this so don't mind the shotty video and a 9V battery for power source:
