Gas for v6?

I have been using the premium gas in my car sense I got it. However I was reading the owners manual and it say I should be using the regular 87 gas due to having the 3.6L v6. Should I switch to the regular? what is the difference between the way it burn for a v6 and v8?

Welcome to the site.

This has been discussed many times before here. I suggested using the search feature.

But to answer your question I've always put 91+ in my car. Some will say it's a waste but it's your ride and investment. Take care of it.

I think 87 is safest because if it runs too rich, it can definitely diminish the performance and gas mileage. But I don't know. The v6 is rated at 87, so I'd assume it's best to use what the people who made the car say it needs. I'm sure you're fine though!

and once again, the 87 is what GM says is the minimum octane gas you should burn. you can continue to use it, or go higher. a higher octane does improve the performance, but probably (outside of a track) nothing you would notice in daily driving.

Run high octane. Be impressed when dyno tuning.

You do not have to use premium, but it's probably better for your car if you do. With knock sensors and all the other computers premium isn't required. You should have slightly better performance and less fuel consumption with premium. If I could stomach the extra cost I'd put premium in mine.

Premium is what, 30-40c more/gallon? That translates to about 8 dollars more over regular on a BONE DRY tank.

Burn whatever you feel like paying for. Personally, when I had my V6 it ran just fine on 87 - couldn't tell any difference when occasionally burning higher octane. Continuous use of high octane might make a difference... but I doubt it. Just MHO.

I hear ya. It's not that it's all that much more costly... just a question if you're paying for any gain or not. If not (and I'm not saying "no gain" 'cause I don't know) why spend it. That would be like buying a six-pack and then just pouring it out on the ground. A pointless waste of money.

Place more of an emphasis on top tier gasoline than octane.

Best words yet. There is no difference in the octane for the v6 some cars NEED the higher octane but the v6 doesnt need it. I believe its mainly about higher compression engines.

Preignition is caused by running premium fuel in a engine that is designed to run on low octane. The compression ration in your v-6 is too low to combust premium fuel completely. Running premium fuel will cause your ECU to pull timing because it is knocking. You will not feel this or hear this knock. This will also cause greater carbon build up in your combustion chamber.

You are full of it.

These engines have 11.5 to 1 Compression Ratio, it can run 87 but works better with 91/93. Which is why there are performance tunes for 91/93 and none for 87.

Theres the thread with a bunch of info regarding this debate in the LFX forum.
