Borla S axleback on L99 with AFM off - drone
I have the Borla S axle back system on my L99, with AFM turned off. I also have the CAI Inc. Cold air intake.
The sound of the exhaust is amazing compared to stock, however there is quite a bit of drone between 1500 and 1900 rpm. Note that I already have AFM turned off. Would DynaPad in the trunk help to reduce the drone noise level in the cabin?

Please see this link. This is a must if you have drone. I bought 2 j-bends and 1 u-bend from Jegs and cut them up for the fabrication. Any muffler shop should be able to weld it up.

The drone is not that bad at all, had this exact setup for 8 months... if you don't like that, do NOT go for headers or catback. Any additional performance mod will increase the volume in most cases...Axle back, even with the S type with the L99 resonators and AFM off, may be one of the most mild exhausts.
Like sasquash said, on the highway... turn your radio up. Highway driving you cannot enjoy the tone of your exhaust anyways. Once you get back on the city streets, then you enjoy the exhaust. I have watched people buy the dynamat, and did not get the results they wanted after hours of install.... the only other alternative is to buy a Honda.

LS3 and L99 are prone to the 1500-2000rpm drone. there is no 100% solution other than keep stock

I don't believe that. This is a structural acoustics problem that is amenable to solution by changing the stiffness, dampening, or excitation frequency of the system. The helmholtz resonantors that are shown in the links are "designed" to attenuate drone frequencies which correspond to highway speeds.

Call Solo and order a set of their J pipes. I had drone with my set up, Borla S type cat back and Kooks headers. Once I added the J pipes drone was completely gone in that 1500-2000 rpm range. I have an LS3 though.

I have the Borla catback (S-type) system. The drone is usually only noticeable during acceleration. Much rather live with that then the quietness of a stock setup. Plus, I needed to change exhaust due to other mods.

Great deep rumble and no tune on my L99. Of course my fully insulated unibody (Dynamat) helps. Great sound outside but oh so quiet inside....

I'm with the "J" pipe guys.... either Solo or custom made, I've heard good things about them. I started about the same as you but with Touring axleback and AFM tuned off. Then I had my stereo guys throw some Dynamat in the truck, didn't do much at all but I didn't cover the whole trunk. Now I have headers, CAI, and full Borla Touring. If you don't like the drone now it will be worse with Headers. It's not too bad for me, but crusing about 52-55 mph (my drive to work) it can get sorta bad. Nice thing is at 72-75 highway cruising it's barely noticable..... I might try a custom "J" pipe eventually. Good luck! |
