First Test: 2010 Hurst/Camaro Performance Series 4 Supercharged

The Gentleman's Hotrod Lives!

June 16, 2010 / By Nate Martinez

When George Hurst was crafting his first factory-backed special edition car -- the 1968 Hurst/Olds -- he had one goal in mind: create a "gentleman's hot rod" that looked great and ran fast. Mission accomplished. The Hurst/Olds made a statement on both the street and the drag strip, and, of course, you grabbed the gears with its now-legendary Hurst Shifter.

Fast-forward 42 years and the supercharged black and gold 2010 Hurst/Camaro continues Hurst's famous philosophy. Built by Hurst Performance Vehicles in southern California, the Hurst/Camaro has simple, yet impactful, performance modifications matched with a subtle, but to-the-point classic flair.

Each of the 50 "Performance Series 4 Supercharged" limited editions arrives at HPV's factory as a stock Camaro SS. White, black, and silver serve as the primary exterior palette, although others colors can be optioned. Our black tester wore thick matte black and thin gold striping, giving it a contemporary take on the classic hotrod look. All of the side lettering that looks like decaling isn't. It's painted on and protected by a hefty clearcoat layer.

A sleek "Airspeed" trunklid spoiler modifies the Camaro's rear form, while each corner receives classically styled 20-inch forged aluminum alloys from HRE Wheels (20-in. x 9-in. front/ 20-in. x 11-in. rear) to reduce unsprung weight and, of course, bump up the wow factor. Its 1-inch lower and stiffer stance comes courtesy of adjustable Eibach coilovers and a thicker front anti-roll bar. Hurst's latest modern day hotrod is handsome and classy, accomplishing a lot with a little.

Small details carry on within the cavernous black interior. Wide, Hurst-badged buckets wrapped in Katzkin leather offer plenty of support over long drives, while simultaneously bolstering the glutes and lats during canyon runs. The leather first gets dyed gold then black, so that small hints of the former glisten through. Gold stitching trims the dash, doors, and seats to complete the look. It is not overly "tunerish;" only six Hurst labels can be spotted inside the clean cabin. Oh and there's one more thing -- the shifter.

Something is bothering me about the 1/4 mile time, the CTSV got a 12.2 with 556, they are saying this car with over 600 is doing a 12.3

That's the MOPAR Pistol Grip one... they haven't completed engineering on the T-Grip for the Camaro yet...

Do you think that the weight of the car be a factor? Im not sure how much the CTSV weighs but i know the Camaro is really heavy to begin with. From quarter mile tests between the StanK GT and the Camaro SS, the Camaro was only a tenth of a second faster even though it has a lot more HP and this is because the mustang was 500lbs lighter.

Don't read to much into Ford's numbers the car is highly underated and dyno's higher then the LS3's 426

Love the paint job, hate the shift knob which is effin' ironic since that should be a cool focal point of the "Hurst Camaro". If the right knob wasn't ready, they shoulda waited until it was.
