Solution: IF the Z28 comes out and it has more power, and if you begin modding your SS now, by the time it hits the dealer, you should be able to compete or blow it away...

especially the 2010, the changes they made to the suspension tuning really made it a much better performing car....i would consider one, but the exterior styling just doesn't do it for me, but w/e to each his own

2SSRS down a level. I ordered the highest level car and now it already is not gonna be it. I started a waiting list at my dealer again, this time for a Z/28. I really love my SS and not real sure what to do about this next level of car. However, I could see a white Z/28 in the garage.

Lol..here we go again. Camaro guys are the first to scream "GT500 should not be compared to a SS" Then we get "SS are faster than a GT500 with a few mods" So which one is it ? My GT as of now has the same performance as a STOCK GT500. But guess what, its still not a GT500. It still does not have forge internals, and the tranny. The GT500 is still a more reliable car at higher boost levels. Also for the same money I spent, a GT500 owner will mod and DESTROY my GT. So again...why ? Sure. Yes you can mod a SS and make it fast. It could beat a STOCK GT500. But guess what happens when you run into a modded GT500...... When you bring modding into the picture..anything is possible at that point. Your only as fast as your pockets are deep. |

1969 Camaro The Z28 was continued for the road racing fan. It came with the 302 ci engine conservatively rated at 290 hp. Upgrades to the car included dual exhausts, special front and rear suspension, a heavy-duty radiator, quick ratio steering, and 15 x 7-inch Rally wheels. A four-speed manual transmission and power disc brakes were mandatory options and a Posi-Traction rear axle was highly recommended. Top speed was estimated at 120 mph. The Z28 was very popular and Chevy produces over 20,000 copies. For those who enjoyed straight line performance, the Camaro SS was an obvious choice. A 396 ci V-8 with up to 375 horse power was available on the Super Sport. Those engines produced so much torque that the rear suspension often buckled under the stress. Wheel hop was very common in these cars. However, with the right aftermarket suspension components, the SS was a force on the drag strip and at traffic lights. |

Uh..........where were you during the 4th gens. Sorry but my 02 SS > 02 Z28. The SS's had higher hp ratings than the Z28's because of the ram air and slp exhaust. I don't know about back in the day cuz I"m only 28 but the Camaro I grew up with and drove you wanted to own the SS.

Yea it's been a long running debate. IMO the SS should be above Z28.. but that's old school. New school is Z28 above SS. Which is cool.
So of course with 5th Gen the Z28 needs to be a special edition, above the SS. Unless optionally it could be a value v8 like 1ss but that probably won't happen. |

The Camaro received its first (and only) styling update in 1998 with the addition of a new front fascia. But the big news was under the hood where the Z28 received the Corvette's new all-alluminum small block, the LS-1. The first all-aluminum Camaro engine since the 1969 ZL-1, the LS-1 was rated at a strong 305bhp. Furthermore, Chevrolet made the SS model official by producing it itself, and it featured the LS-1 with standard Ram Air to generate 320 bhp. Engines: 3.8 V6 200 bhp. Z28: LS1 5.7 V8 305 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 320 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. SS: LS1 5.7 V8 320 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 345 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. The 1999 Camaro continued with the only changes being an electronic throttle control on V6 models, a new oil life monitor, and a Torsen limited slip differential. Engines: 3.8 V6 200 bhp. Z28: LS1 5.7 V8 305 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 320 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. SS: LS1 5.7 V8 320 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 345 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. The only changes for 2000 were radio controls integrated into the steering wheel, body-color side mirrors, some new interior fabrics, and an optional 12 disc CD changer. engines: 3.8 V6 200 bhp. Z28: LS1 5.7 V8 305 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 320 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. SS: LS1 5.7 V8 320 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 345 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. Once again, changes were minimal for 2001, with only restyled 16-inch wheels, a new paint color, and 5 extra horsepower for the LS-1 engine. Engines: 3.8 V6 200 bhp. Z28: LS1 5.7 V8 310 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 335 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm. SS: LS1 5.7 V8 320 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 345 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. Performance: Z28: 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.0 seconds @ 101.3 mph. SS: 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, 1/4 mile in 13.7 seconds @ 105.6 mph. The writing was on the wall, and 2002 would be the last year for the Camaro. Changes were understandably minimal and included new sound systems, a standard automatic transmission for V6 convertibles, and a new power steering cooler for Z28s. But Chevrolet did celebrate the 35th (and last) anniversary of the Camaro with a special graphics package for the Z28 SS coupe and convertible. The stripes and logos of the 35th Anniversary package were attractive, but couldn't keep the Camaro from being canceled after the 2002 model year. Engines: 3.8 V6 200 bhp. Z28: LS1 5.7 V8 310 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 335 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm. SS: LS1 5.7 V8 320 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 345 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm. Performance: Z28: 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.0 seconds @ 101.3 mph. SS: 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, 1/4 mile in 13.7 seconds @ 105.6 mph. 2002 the Chevrolet Camaro Z28's price went up quite substantially, equipped with the 'SS' (super sport) package. the preferred equipment package had a sticker price of almost $30,000 dollars! |

It did not. Really, '02 Z28s came with the same intake set-up until the end of the run when the last ones got Blackwing lids. The only performance benefit, power-wise, for an SS was the SLP DD CB that a lot of people found to have restrictors in them anyways... I know that one could opt' for suspension and chassis bits, but as far as power goes, Z28s and SSs made the same power. GMHTP ran a Z28 to 12.8s I think in the July '99 issue. That's the only one I've lost, so I won't quote it, but I know it's right around there.
