Modify/Cut stock hood? - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

I'm looking for information/how to modify a stock hood. I purchased a second hood online from another forum member, and want to cut out 6 total slots to replace with mesh as a vent source. I have absolutely no idea where to start, nor how to do it without requiring repainting it. Unless that isn't possible of course. Any helpful suggestions greatly appreciated.

Below is a photoshop image I created to show what I was after. The blue on the hood signifies where the cutouts would be for ventilation. I don't know if I should put a rubber grommet style edge on it when I put mesh under it, or what. Like I said, helpful suggestions greatly appreciated.

Blacky did that, except he did his based off of the BBII hood. I have no idea, but my guess would be a jigsaw? Though I'm just guessing at handheld saws that could do the job. I also don't think that you can get around repainting it, but that's an assumption on my part. So I could be wrong, it did happen once before.

i want to do something along those lines and i was thinking that i would cut the holes myself and purchase some type of vent insert.. that would cover up the edges where i made the cuts.. havent looked to much into it yet though

ACS is coming out with hood inserts that will give you the BBII look

I just looked up those inserts. That could work.... if I can stack them anyways... I'd prefer them more over the engine to allow heat from the LT headers to get out easier.

Are you dead set on making this a DIY. VIS sells a hood just like what you're talking about.

Well I've already paid $300 for a hood that will be here tomorrow. So mostly. Plus it's always a better story when you say, "I did that myself".

I really want to modify my tail lights and head lights, but I'm not sure it's worth messing them up.

For cutting the holes, I'd use an air powered cutoff wheel. Just remember it's aluminum, and will cut quickly. The big thing that's in your way is the under structure of the hood. If it was all flat it'd be cake, but I don't think it is. Getting away with this without painting may be possible, but I seriously doubt it.

Yes the understructure has to be taken into consideration. To be sure the resulting hood is stable. Think about it long and hard before you make the first cut.

DIY is great but just think out ahead and do not rush it.

After the cutting and welding you will most definitely be painting.
