2012 INDY 500 PACE CAR

Just to avoid confusion these are the "Official Vehicles" and/or "Festival Cars" not "Official Pace Car" replicas. These are the cars used by the track and various officials/VIPs throughout the month. The 2012 Official Pace Car has not been announced yet and may or may not be a Camaro. They've finally nailed down the graphics and have the pace cars made, it may be opening day before they unveil the pace car.

As a rule they are but not always. In '08 they used two Corvette pace cars for the race, the E85 Z06 and the black/silver 1978 pace car tribute. They made replicas of the black/silver and used those as Festival cars. Sometimes they will be the same model car, but the graphics will be different between the Festival and the pace car like in 2009. The most recent year they used different models was in 2006 when the SSR paced and the Festival cars were Corvette 'verts. I believe that sometimes it is difficult for them to amass a little over 50 matching cars as well as the pace car and it's two back-ups, so they use a bigger volume seller for the Festivals. Probably would have been pretty difficult in '06 to come up with that many SSR's in the timeframe they were needed.

If you are interested in finding out what number in order your car was built out of the pace cars you need to PM jarhead your vin number, I was a bit concerned at first sharing my info with him but I believe he's doing this for all the right reasons, he has a sequence number list of all pace cars and with any vin number he can match it to his list and tell you what number in order your car was built, he is also painstakingly putting together a complete registery of all cars produced. The personal info that you give him can be as limited as you wish. I gave him my info and hope others will as well.

You guys rock with your knowledge! Lee at Camaropacecars.com was able to document that this car was # 77 at the 1995 Indy 500 ( they numbered the cars 1-40 and 70-80) and # 9 at the Brickyard 400. If anyone out there can give us more information on this car or knows who the driver was for the Indy 500 or the Brickyard 400 we would really appreciate it. Was this known as a Z1Z or ZLZ???

Marilyn at GraphikConcepts said they re-decaled the Indy cars for the Brickyard and that was a rarity. According to CompNine, there were only 50 of this car made in 1995. We know of 4 still on the road. She is all original except for the top (black now instead of white). We have a new set of Brickyard 400 decals for her and the tonneau covers for going topless. She has the LT1 Corvette engine and runs strong!

I saw one of these 'Courtesy Cars' southbound on Lafayette Road on Thursday as I was going north on I65. Looked pretty nice with the black top. The thing is, the Pace Car usually and generally has 'Official Pace Car' on it. These cars just have Indy 500 on them and the 'Chevrolet Official Vehicle' at the bottom rocker. I'm not so sure about these in days of being 'Lean' that maybe they, IMS went conservative with Camaros and maybe have 3 'vettes as Pace Cars. One for official track duty, a backup and the other on display. This has been done before but I'm no authority on it.
Having grown up here, to see the Pace Cars around town you got excited and when you saw them, you knew and you pointed it out to people around you or told people that you saw the Pace Car today, not knowing that its a replicar of the one that does the actual duties at IMS.
