8+ point roll cage helmet/head clearance
Kinda of a bummer......... we were almost done with the roll cage and installed one of the seat just to find out the the down bar is way to close to your head. With a helmet on it touches the bar.
This is a mock up Here you can see we radius the bar. At the A pillar, the down bar almost touching the headliner. On the B pillar theres about 3/4" gap. Even if we had it touching the head liner, it would be even to fix the problem. Here you can see were a Copo Camaro has much less clearance. Basically as of right now, we have blown three days of work! We are going to take a mental break as we are flying out tomorrow to attend the PRI show in Indy. We will back on Sunday. These are some of the thoughts that crossed our minds. A) rip out the cage and just keep the 4 point B) remove the factory seat bracket which would give us about 2.5" of head clearance C) Rip out the entire deal including the four point and doing a whole new cage that would be mounted fix to the body D) rip out the doorbars/halo and try again, this time taking head clearance heavily into consideration. Option A wont fly. We definitely need a roll cage. My Dad was involved in an accident were he was riding with his best friend. The car ended upside down with the roof caved in. The accident broke his friends neck and he passed away at nineteen. Option B concerns us that we will loss some of the sight of vision over the dash. Making it not really practical. Option C would require a complete custom interior and more delays. Option D is what we are planning on unless we can get some feedback to sway us otherwise. Mentally we are a little burnt to say it mildly. For those of you who have cages, we would greatly appreciate if you can post pics of yourself sitting inside to show us how much head clearance you have. |

Option B?
Fabricate a seat bracket with enough height for dash clearance? Good luck with your decision. |

There is only so far you can push the bars out, so build the cage with that in mind. The seats will have to be positioned accordingly. The only other option I see is to push the main hoop towards the rear, which may be limited by certification specs.

I think I would look at modifying the seat and bracket first. I even seen one race prepped car mount the bracket underneath the car and cut small slits for the bracket tabs to go through the floor. It was not adjustable but you might not need to adjust. Good luck!
