Onstar Battery

Got a notifcation email from Onstar to let them do a diagnostic. After the check, I was told that the battery in my Onstar is dead and does not transmit unless the switch is on. They said I need to take my car to my dealer to have this changed.

Soooo.... 2 questions:

Anyone else had this issue?

And if so, is it something thing that I can do at home?

I hate to haul it back to the service department just for this.

Thanks

Mine went dead on 8/1/11. The radio also fried a day after that. Almost 2 months later and I'm still waiting for replacement parts. I guess a 2011 radio will not fit a 2010.

Yeah, my OnStar backup battery had to be replaced by my dealer. Simple fix from what I understand

Had the same issue. Took it to the dealer, and they replaced it within 30 minutes. This is the back up battery which is used to send automatic crash notification messages.

Even if your battery dies, you will still be able to use all the OnStar features minus the automatic crash notification.

It was under warranty, so the dealer did not charge me. It is located behind the glove box.

My light just turned red today and the voices in my car told me the same thing. Did you by any chance sign up for that family locator trial beta test too? I was thinking maybe it's sending more messages than normal because of it and killed the battery, but who knows.

While we're on this topic, I've heard it mentioned that thieves can easily disable onstar rendering the ability to track/find the car useless. Is this true? It's been suggested that a Viper alarm combined with onstar is the way to go. I've looked into Viper a bit, and if I can get an alarm to work with my current key fob, I might add it on.
