It is an easy fix but time consuming to take the machine apart.

Couple of fixes from heating the unit up to tightening the heatsink up.

Best bet is to google it as there are numerous videos.

Cheers

I have had three RRODs, two on one unit and one on another. All three times fixed for free by Microsoft. In the end they really stepped up to the plate by extending the warranties and making it super easy to get the warranty repair.

Easiest and fastest RMA process I have ever dealt with. Plus each time they had my unit for a week they returned it with one month's free xbox live.

You could also try the towel trick. A couple friends said it really works and will fix it for a couple months.

Wrap the xbox in a towel and let it run. The console will heat up and melt the soder on the affected part or chip or whatever and reconnect it (completely technical explination). Its said to work. I stood in line an
d got one of the first run models and never had issues. Guess I was lucky but still worry its gonna die every.time I turn it on

Just kidding, but I think most people buy what their friends have or they have both.

What you do is disconnect all of the plugs except the power cord. Take a couple towels and wrap them around the xbox for a couple hours and turn it on. It was determined early on that almost all of the RRODs was caused by the low grade solder that MS used and what would happen was the xbox would heat up enough to slightly melt the solder and loosen it causing bad connections which eventually caused the RROD. The towel trick, as already mentioned, remelts the solder and allows it to make connections again but only for a limited time. The only true fix for this type of RROD is to fix it yourself or have someone else fix it.

MS as since changed the type of solder that is used, put in a bigger fan and a bigger heatsink so it's not as common but it does still happen.

Not everyone has the cash to own multiple gaming systems. I wouldn't mind owning a ps3, but right now I have my 360 and my pc (which is about due for an upgrade)
