How to tell if you have holes behind your rear bowtie

Tools you need

Scraper

Claw Hammer

Trunk Lid

What to do

Note that the cover is angled down for when you go to replace it

Slide scraper behind plastic cover between cover and trunk lid carpeting

Pry towards yourself

Do the same thing on this side (when popping this side make sure to hold the cover so it doesn't fly off)

Pry towards yourself

Plastic tabs on trunk latch cover

Slide scraper behind plastic pin between pin and trunk lid carpeting

Pry towards yourself

Slide claw of hammer between plastic pin and carpeting

Tap hammer end with hand so plastic pin slides between claw

Pry towards yourself and pop the plastic pin out

There are 11 pins in total

Next you need to remove the emergency trunk release handle, pull carpeting out and towards yourself then up

While pushing up on bottom of carpet pull down on emergency trunk release handle

Flip handle over

Tip handle down to remove metal pin from back of handle

Place finger behind metal pin and push towards yourself

Metal pin should pop out

Pull carpeting up and towards yourself letting metal pin slid through the carpeting

Bare trunk lid

Left side

Plastic pin :(

Right side

Plastic pin :(

Not always, here are a couple people with May builds that did not have mounting holes. My car is also a May build and built a couple days after theirs were built and mine does have holes.

Goo gone gets it off. Then just use double sided 3M tape to put it back on.

I removed my trunk lid liner yesterday to install my MPD spoiler but didn't find this thread until last night.

So I took it off again this morning hoping to not find the bowtie pins but they are there. Thanks to the OP for letting me know how to find out.

BTW, not that's it's a big deal but there is a slot in the liner so you don't have to remove the emergency release handle if you don't want to.

Why dont you guys try to find out the VIN cutoff?

It would be much easier to check your VIN.
