Any NYC/Long Island Aux. Police, Volunteer Firefighters or EMTs
I wanted to know if anyone on here is an Auxiliary police officer, Volunteer Firefighter or EMT.
What is the training like? How long does it take? I've always wanted to do one of these three and I've finally got the time to do the training. Also, on a side note, strobes on a Camaro look sick, wouldn't mind having them on my car. |

working in law enforcement id say stay away from city aux. Long island has some great vol fire and emt programs but i think its only if you live out on the island I'm not sure. But if you have anything to do with nyc and vol and you put strobes on your car, internal affairs will take your car and prob take you too....
But strobed out camaro's do look sick, I've done a few =) |

I go to school in Long Island. I wasn't really thinking of doing aux police in NYC but EMT is pretty much universal. I know that my friend is an EMT and his fellow EMTs have some sick strobed out cars (In Jersey though).
If I had to pick between the three then the one which lets me use lights on my car would be the tiebreaker (I know its sort of messed up and I should pick the one I like most, but I love strobes on a Camaro, or any car) |

That's pretty sick, I know who to contact now if I need to get some lights for my car.

Once I move out to the Island (Nassua) I'm stuck between volunteer fire and aux police. I read that you get 10% off property taxes for volunteer fire (and property taxes in LI are insane!), possibly for aux too I wanted to do EMT but the 100+ hour training is intense |

EMT training at the basic level is a joke. It is time consuming, but if you have common sense and at least a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology, it's a cake walk. Don't let the perceived perks of the various jobs be what guides you though. Do what you like and where you think you'll be able to give the most time and effort to. Look into the departments, their call statistics and what the training and riding requirments are. If the fire department only does 10 calls a month, and a majority are BS, you'll probably get bored easily. If they are a 60 call a month and you have to do call percentages, you may get stuck losing a lot of sleep trying to make your percentages. Personally I love doing EMS. Yea a majority of your calls will be BS, but I feel like you get to help people more directly and see the end result more often than the other two. Feel free to email me though if you have any questions.
