Injen is a true cold air intake....long tube that runs toward the bottom of the car. Most of the rest are short ram intakes.

What is the difference between a cold air intake and a short ram intake?
As the name implies, a short ram intake is "short". Due to it's size, the intake pipe doesn't stretch far away from the intake manifold, so the air filter remains somewhere near the engine. A cold air intake has longer piping, and is designed to push the air filter away from the engine into an area that has colder air, hence the name cold air intake. Typically, since the cold air intake draws in cooler air it usually makes more horsepower than a short ram. However, depending on engine design, this isn't always the case, and we'll explain further below. A short ram intake is generally less expensive as well, and easier to install and service since the air filter is typically easy to see when you pop the hood. A cold air intake is longer, and places the air filter farther away, sometimes in a fender, so installation is more difficult as is service, and is usually more expensive.

This is true, Except for the Vararam which gets its air from in front of the radiator. This is both a ram air intake and a Cold air intake. You can see this if you use a OBD2 Tool or something that will monitor Ambent air temp and Inlet air temps. Both will be very close with the vararam.

Good post. I will add that SRI's (short ram intake) generally will have better throttle response where a true CAI will have better top end power. If you have an SRI with a truly sealed air box, you are getting the best of both worlds!

The thing that I would be worried about with a long tube CAI would be hydrolock. If you have to drive through deepish water, water can actually get sucked into the intake manifold causing massive damage to your engine.

Throw in an insulated airbox and thermal coated intake tube to keep the IAT within 2 degrees of ambient and you are really talking! Now you have the cooler air just like a long tube version through all the insulating factors, yet you have the short ram travel to get the improved throttle response and low end power. This is why our CAI is extremely popular.
