what you think
That cam is setup for a PD blower and not a turbo. The cam wouldn't have been ideal for your turbo, but I don't think it was the root of your problem, but may have contributed. It may have allowed the lean condition, but I would hope a good tuner would have caught that.

If this was tuned by who I think tuned it, you are not the first Turbonetics kit that has gone a "Tad" lean and blown up.

I hope that is no the case because I was thinking of going to him for a dyno tune this week. I should be done with my header install today!

Post your dyno graph, we need to see your AFR in relation to the curve.

Definitely a bad tune.

Ryne at CMS is the best tuner we have in socal. His tunes dont run a tad lean or a tad rich they are just right.

Detonation, kapow.
There is a difference between running lean and detonation. Air fuel mixture could have been good, but you had too much timing advance.
Or, it was all ducky and you put some bad gas in it.

Looks like it knocked pretty hard. It could be the tune or it can be a mechanical failure, overboost, etc.

We did a twin turbo LS3 in a 50 Chevrolet that didn't last long after the tune. The guy built a forged 376.. First pull it made 20 psi before I could shut it down. Turns out the springs in the waste gate where hanging up on the housing causing it to overboost. He mentioned it ran like a bat out of hell right before it blew up! I bet 20 psi on a stock bottom end when it was only tuned for 7!

Unfortunately, it looks like it was just not handled correctly. There are some tuners that try to hard to get the #'s and don't do it the right way. I've seen guys that have shut off knock sensor sensitivity just to try to get higher numbers and had the timing and AFR waaaaayyyy off.

There was another guy here in SoCal that had an '11 that went through the factory motor, a rebuild on the factory motor after the turbonetic turbo "failed", then a forged 427 broke apart and all that was in less than 2200 miles because of an overzealous tuner. He wound up selling the car and moving on just so he could find something he could enjoy.

Where you are somewhat local (I'm in the Temecula area) you may want to take the hour drive up here to talk to Ryne @ Cunningham Motor Sports. It's not going to be a cheap fix, but he will keep it from happening again and get you back on the road enjoying the car worry free, if you are willing to follow his advice. He is a stickler for having things done right or he wont put his name or reputation on it.

Good luck!

The easiest way is to have a boost gauge with built in alarm. On mine if it goes over an aloud number the whole gauge flashes red.

AEM offers a fail safe a/f/boost gauge that is intergrated with the tuning, if it notices over boost or high a/f it shuts the power down.

There is a really cool video of it on their website where the set an Evo up to over boost and u see the system save the car.

Ben
