My stock G8 GT gave a Zl1 a run for its money in 32 degree weather he simply could not find traction.

Happens. I had a Saturn Sky right next to me in my 300C SRT8 with 643 rwhp that ran 10.70's. Couldn't get it to hook.

Traction for me has definitely been dependent on temperature. The hotter the better. And forget wet!

I think most who are complaining about traction with street tires with a 580 hp engine just don't know how to drive a 580 hp car on street tires.
No 11 inch wide street compound tire will hook a 4100 pound car on the street with 580 hp. At the strip, a drag slick will help get you a good sixty foot time which translates into quick ET. A drag radial will produce a slower sixty foot time but better than the stock tires. MPH will be similar with good or poor traction at the starting line and will dictate your actual horsepower with a good MPH calculator that you can find online.

hahaha sphincter pucker...... That is a good way to "Safely" test you and your cars ability. I will be doing the same before Camaro Fest. Also take traction control off get to know the car that way. Took me 2 years before I started to do that with my last Camaro, I have not done it yet with my Z.

You want best traction in turns and launch combo super sports seem to be the way to go, friend of mine has them on a cts-v w/635rwhp and they stick nicely My zl1 Mikey Thompson et streets 305,35,20 will spin a bit in first but still pulls like a train and chirps trough second and feels like a plane at take off on the street, cornering I don't dare to push it to hard but still take them quick enough to have fun! Ill know how well it hooks when I hit the track June 21st I suppose lol Last edited by ZL1terminator; 05-27-2013 at 09:51 AM. |

Not from a dead start no. But I can confirm that these tires suck below 70 degrees. I put a tvs2300 on my SS car in the fall (P-Zeros), tested it for 2 days before winter (Around 60 degrees). I could roll on it easy in 3rd and blow the tires off at 50mph. Now that it is in the 80's I can hammer it in 2nd and hook. Still have to roll on it in 1st. Also, my 9 second Vega on full slicks will not hook at all on bare ashphalt. Greasy as hell. In order to hook they need a properly prepped track surface with VHT.

Not interested in dead hooking on the street, as it ain't gonna happen. I drove a 600+ rwhp car for 3 years and I'm use to feathering a throttle...well everywhere. It's about the tires being able to hold on in a corner with no throttle input. With the GY's its so predicated on the outside temp. I've never driven a street tire so finicky about temp. A track tire yes, continental sport cups, but not a street tire. Making the switch to Michelins should be the fix I need.

It's got to be better. Happened again on Sunday morning. 55 degrees out and had a nice wiggle as I tried to throttle up on a highway on ramp. full ass pucker......well for my passenger.

Definitely have to watch those cool mornings. On a recent trip it was 9C/50F starting out, but at one point the car started to skate just before the 'Ice Warning' came up on the DIC. I had entered a sudden cool spot where it dipped below 5C/41F momentarily. I still have no trust issues, but then again I spend most of the winter in 2WD in my truck so I'm used to a little wiggle.

Take it to the track. After one lap, even at 60F, these things will get you stickin.
