onebad, some racing series, maybe that one too, limit the power level of the cars, so the stock airbox might just indicate that they are limited to stock horse power levels, got a link to the rules?
I posted earlier in your thread, I'm always a DIY fan, but at the same time, I will tell you I've had 3 air intakes on my car and I felt a SOPT difference with them, noticeable. If you want to try something different, replace the tube with one that does not have those silencers.

What does that have to do with cutting a hole in a stock intake? Not understanding the logic leap.

I remember back when "modified" stock air boxes on turbo Cobalts were outdynoing every aftermarket CAI on the market, lol
I ended up going with the Hahn CAI in the end, but it wasn't for "performance" so much as look to match my engine bay...

Yea but there are probably hp and weight stipulations. They're probably limited to a specific amount of hp. I've seen vehicles in specific categories of racing with engine and hp/tq limitations retain the stock box but run a radical aftermarket cam. Or some other mod that will give more consistent gains. These types of races are designed to keep vehicles evenly matched. I mean, look at the ride height. It isn't even lowered. I bet the vehicles have to retain stock ride height as well. Those rules are why that stock airbox is there. But I doubt he cut it open.

Onebad1le, the stock intake may be good for X amount of hp, but that is in ideal conditions. And that doesn't mean that an actual cold air intake isn't better. And like I said, they are probably using a cam or some other part that will make more substantial and consistent gains than a cold air intake will. Especially if they are driving on a track for extended periods. And you have to remember that its the entire combination with those cars also. They probably design the engine to make a certain amount in a certain RPM range. The aren't just throwing together parts to get to 430 or 445 hp. You figure they need torque for acceleration so that also plays a big part in the design. And they have RPM limitations as well. These guys have a purpose built engine. A cold air intake would do nothing for them in this racing series. So basically, you can't compare what an actual race car has with a street car. And also note that some S/C companies use the stock airbox. And they can make 600 hp. But that's forced induction. And if you were to add an intake, it would make significant gains. Look at the ZL-1, it has the same box. But add an intake and watch what happens, lol!

I eliminated one of the front lights and placed a 4"PVC piece of conduit to the outside of my car, it gave me 567rwhp on a Kia dyno.

Make sure you drill extra-holes in the mufflers to exhaust the extra-air from the stock airbox mod.....dat's all.
