Ya I used to do that when I lived in canada at tim hortons. Timmys use to be a big hang out spot for cars and bikers. Sure miss it and their coffee, now I have to drive to michigan and buy the coffee tins and make it at home.

Wow, that's really awesome, and a great idea. Nobody would ever do that in our town... I think I'm going to do that for somebody soon.

In other words, if you're just paying for the guy behind you and everyone else is doing it too, then it all balances out and no-one actually did anything net nice. Since everyone is in a queue doing EXACTLY the same thing (as in lining up and buying coffee), it's not really a net nice gesture. If on the other hand, you're doing something out of the blue nice and you don't have a line up of people who are peer-pressured into copying it so that the net effect is zeroed out, then that's really a nice gesture. For example, going online and donating to a worthy cause where no-one knows and it's not like a circular ponzi scheme where everyone is just paying for the next guy. Just saying.

I think its a Canadian thing. Ya, it nets out, you may pay more or less than you would have, but at the end of the day its the thought that counts. I've had random people pay for my order in a drive thru, doesn't mean I always pay for the person behind me. Just thought wow, what a great guy/gal. Its not peer pressure, its a need to pay for a service/product regardless.
If someone randomly paid for your coffee, you wouldn't appreciate the thoughtfulness of it? |
