Catch can question

Just a quick question for everyone..... Yesterday I had my first oil change, got it done at the dealer. When I got home I opened the hood while the engine was idling and I heard a loud hissing noise that sounded like it was coming from the catch can. I was able to make the sound stop by squeezing the hose coming into the catch can. Is this a normal sound? I've never heard it while the hood was closed.

sounds like the drain valve is open. turn the wing nut to close the valve, should be good to go...

The OP has an Elite catch can, no drain valve.
From what I've read here on the forum the hissing sound is normal.
Maybe someone with some more experience will chime in....

Do you have hose clamps on both sides of 3/8" fuel lines you're running to it? You should hear a little hissing with the softer fuel line. Unless you throw a cell you're probably okay. Make sure everything is secured nice and tightly. Tight is right.

I thought mine had a problem also. It sounds like a very bad vacuum leak. Contacted Elite and they replied back asking if my hoses were routed according to the picture or link they sent. I did respond with a yes but they never got back to me after that reply. I am gathering that it is just the volume of air being sucked through the engine and PCV system by the hose connected to the airbox on the clean side. Just my thought anyway.

Did you use Teflon tape on the threads of the fittings? Are your clamps in place and secure?

Some sound is normal, but if you said no to either of the above questions, that is likely your answer.

Catch can question

A slight hissing sound is normal, no worries.

It's just the airflow through the rubber hoses.

Yeah, most catch can installs require the use of 3/8" hose, which is usually used for fuel. My bad on the wording that's just what I personally refer to the stuff as!

Yea I used Teflon tape on the threads, and the clamps are secure. I guess the sound is normal, I just never really had the hood open while the engine was running to hear it before the other day. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm leaning toward the purchase of a catch can for my 2013 Camaro's LFX engine. I will probably buy one from Elite Engineering. However, the hissing sound that some folks speak of on this forum after installing a catch can gives me some concern. Can the hissing sound be heard with the hood closed? Can it be heard in the passenger compartment? Since many different posts have popped up over the last several months about the hissing sound, has Elite Engineering come up with a design that would eliminate the hiss?

I have never heard the hiss from inside the passenger compartment. I only heard it when I opened the hood while the engine was running.

All catch cans hiss, it's from the hoses. And no, you cannot hear it inside the cabin. In fact as the above poster stated you can only hear it with the hood up.
