I had a similar problem, I believe I overtightened the filter. Changed the oil and filter, all good now.
To save you from more frustrations, just change it.

Should be 1 turn. Sticker right on the filter says so.
I once had an STP filer that was leaking around the swaged over sheet metal bead, and had to replace it. I've never seen that on an AC Delco filter. Make sure the mating surface on the engine is clean and that you oil the rubber gasket so that the filter can easily go a full turn. |

I put them on about 3/4 turn, hand tight, and no issues. It's probably a bad filter, nothing that you did, just pick up a new one and another quart of oil.

Echo others.. not worth playing with.. just get a new one and replace for peace of mind. I did just put on a Mobil1 filter.. so far so good.

Make sure you don't have a double gasket. Sometimes the old gasket will stick to the filter flange on the engine block. After checking, clean the mounting flange and then the gasket on the filter and lightly oil it again. Hand tighten the filter, I put mine on fairly tight to be honest. If it leaks after this, then replace the filter.

Make sure you don't have one of the "E" suffix filters. They're not as good as the older PF46 filters.
Or get a NAPA Gold or Wix and worry no more. What does Bobtheoilguy know anyway. Last edited by BigRed585Lbs; 10-11-2015 at 08:49 AM. |

I had the same issue..I bought my Camaro back in June and put about 1500 miles on it and I noticed there were spots on the floor in my garage.I looked underneath and noticed oil on the filter..Shoot I have warranty on it so I took it to the dealership and the service guy told be it was a bad seal on the ac delco oil filter..Changed the filter and no more leak so far..but only put about 100 miles since replacement..it just sucks that I have to check after driving it..shouldn't have to...

Was that the filter housing not the actual filter right? The filter has opened ends on both sides and sits in a housing.

2 filter gaskets from my last oil change. They fixed it at no charge. My mechanic (indépendant/friend) told me 2 gaskets would leak large amounts oil as the filter would not seal, and he knew he only put one gasket on my car. Long story short, it was my oil pan gasket that was leaking all along, which was also fixed by another Chevy dealer under warranty. I still don't know if you can drive any distance with 2 oil filter gaskets without a very large leak.
