All repairs require approval by the warranty company whether it's GM or an independent company like the OP is using. I've dealt with them a few times. It's not just a matter of racking up the charges and send a bill. For instance, warranty companies do not pay diagnostic labor and they set their own labor rates sometime. Also there is a deductable the customer never wants to pay.

I recall days when they used to fix engines and rebuild transmissions at the dealer. You are correct they don't see it as cost effective anymore. GM did fix my differential though.
