I just had my ring and pinion replaced. It took 2 weeks from getting the parts and having a special thin wall socket made at a machine shop. This was all done at the dealer.

There seems to be a difficulty in getting the backlash correct on this rear. It has not only happened in the original rears but in replacements as well.

Had the same whine in my 2015 ZL1 convertible. They rebuilt the rear end , new gears etc. Drove it 1000 miles noise was still there. They completely replaced the rear differential. The noise is still there but 50% less than before. They say the rear end is inherently noisy anyway.

I have been in cars with 15K plus miles dead quiet, and mine has whined since 3k, but hasn't changed significantly in the the last 10K, even after tracking.

I have the same problem. Noise coming from rear end while coasting around 40-50 mph. Dealer told me it's normal. Should I worry?

If it does it on decel it is likely your backlash. If it it does it on slow turns when cold it is fluid.

Definitely don't worry about it but your gears backlash is wrong so if your unhappy with the sound definitely make them fix it for you. Mine was pretty loud so you could not miss it. Good luck if you decide to take it in again. Thanks to everyone's support. Hopefully have my ZL1 back on Monday.

Got my ZL1 back tonight and on the drive home no annoying whine. My backlash was way off .083 spec is .006 to .010. Think I will go easy on the rear end for a bit. Anyone know if there is any official break in period?

500, varying speeds, not exceed 80.

Actually the ZL1 is 1500 mile break in. I changed my fluid at 1500 and there was some very small shavings on the magnetic plug. The 1500 was breaking for everything, not sure if the rear would be different. Each to their own though.

OP you are lucky. I have never been able to get the dealer to fix this. I have been living with it for 15,000 miles. Do a goggle search for rear diff break in. You need to heat cycle it properly. I think its about 200 miles.

That sucks you had issues. Its not always that way. My dealer was refusing to fix my rear end issue and I hit up Chevy Customer Sat on here and they had me an apt in 24hrs. Didn't cost me a dime and all was good. Sucks there is no consistency. Good Luck to you.
